Alice Capsey and Heather Knight produced a match-turning partnership as England beat India in the Taunton decider to claim the three-match T20 series 2-1.
India posted 180/?, setting England a target of 181 after Harmanpreet Kaur struck 56 not out off 40 balls, including seven fours. Deepti Sharma and Yastika Bhatia each contributed 32 to keep the visitors in control through the middle overs.
England looked in trouble early, slipping to 38 for 3 inside six overs, but Capsey and Knight put the chase back on track with a superb 137-run stand from 76 balls. Capsey finished with 82 from 43 deliveries and was named Player of the Match, while Knight remained unbeaten on 70 as the hosts reached their target with six wickets and overs to spare. It was England Women’s highest successful T20 chase on home soil.
The result will intensify selection discussions ahead of this summer’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. Head coach Charlotte Edwards had named an unchanged side for the decider, but Capsey’s match-winning display — the 21-year-old also bowls and is an accomplished fielder — strengthens her case for a higher batting position amid a crowded top-order contest.
Captain Charlie Dean played a pivotal role in the field, taking a catch and a wicket and helping lift the team’s energy. Linsey Smith provided the initial breakthrough, forcing Shafali Verma into a catch that Dean took unusually far back. Dean later trapped Smriti Mandhana lbw, while Sophie Ecclestone produced a crucial direct hit to dismiss Yastika Bhatia at a key moment.
Lauren Bell was England’s most successful bowler, finishing with two wickets for 36, including the scalp of Deepti Sharma as she looked to build a big partnership with Harmanpreet.
With the World Cup just days away, Edwards said the squad is closer to settling on a starting XI but indicated competition for places remains fierce, particularly at the top of the order. Capsey’s ability to hit around the ground, bowl off-spin and field strongly gives her added selection value.
Charlie Dean praised the calmness of the chase and the pair’s decision-making, saying the dressing room never doubted Capsey and Knight would deliver once they had the partnership underway.
