Zaine Cordy trade news
The Western Bulldogs premiership player will make the switch to the Saints, who have identified Cordy as a defensive option for them.
The move was reported by AFL.com.au on Tuesday and confirmed by the clubs on Wednesday morning, with the Dogs not receiving a compensation pick in return after they signed Liam Jones as an unrestricted free agent on Tuesday.
Cordy played 118 games for the Dogs after being a father-son selection at the 2014 NAB AFL Draft.
The Bulldogs on Tuesday signed Jones as an unrestricted free agent to return to the club, and the AFL, after quitting Carlton due to his COVID-19 vaccination stance.
“I’m really happy to be joining the Saints,” Cordy said.
“While I loved my time at the Bulldogs and will forever be grateful for the opportunities they gave me, I’m confident the time is right for this next chapter of my career.
“I’m looking forward to meeting all my teammates and coaches after the break and getting stuck into a big pre-season.”
AFL Trade week
The second day of the trade period has come to an end and three more players have now found new homes on another busy day.
Fremantle wingman Blake Acres joined Carlton, Brisbane Lions forward Daniel McStay crossed to Collingwood, and former Carlton defender Liam Jones headed back to his old home the Western Bulldogs.
The Dockers received a future third-round pick for Acres, while the Lions and Blues got picks 35 and 49 respectively from the AFL as compensation for those free-agency departures.
But those weren’t the only big stories to emerge on Tuesday.
Earlier in the day, Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd dropped a bombshell that retired Bomber Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti was contemplating a comeback, and that Fremantle were leading Essendon in the race for his signature.
Meanwhile, Michael Gleeson reported that a deal involving Fremantle duo Griffin Logue and Darcy Tucker going to North Melbourne could unlock the stalled Luke Jackson and Brodie Grundy deals.
Melbourne want more than Fremantle’s pick 13 and their future first-round pick for Jackson, and they might just get that courtesy of the future second-round and/or third-round pick that the Dockers will receive from North for Logue and Tucker.

Zaine Cordy has joined St Kilda as an unrestricted free agent.
The 25-year-old defender has departed the Western Bulldogs to sign with the Saints, reportedly on a three-year deal.
Cordy, who was part of the 2016 premiership with the Bulldogs, spent eight seasons in the red, white and blue.
“I’m really happy to be joining the Saints,” Cordy said in a club statement.
“While I loved my time at the Bulldogs and will forever be grateful for the opportunities they gave me, I’m confident the time is right for this next chapter of my career.
“I’m looking forward to meeting all my teammates and coaches after the break and getting stuck into a big pre-season.”
Cordy played 14 games for the Bulldogs in season 2022 for a career total of 118.
He joined the Dogs as a father-son selection via the 2014 draft and now heads to the Saints the day after Liam Jones returned to the Whitten Oval.
