More than nine years after arriving in Ann Arbor with a smile and a plan, Jim Harbaugh is heading back to the NFL.

Harbaugh, credited with resurrecting the University of Michigan football program, leading it to three straight Big Ten Conference titles and, even more recently, a national title, has accepted the head-coaching job with the Los Angeles Chargers, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Chargers have yet to confirm the hire. Harbaugh has not made any statements publicly after interviewing with Los Angeles twice and once with Atlanta during this hiring cycle.

The move brings to an end a longstanding back-and-forth between Harbaugh, 60, and the NFL, the peak of the football coaching mountain in the United States.

He interviewed with the Minnesota Vikings following Michigan’s 2021 season, and again with the Denver Broncos following 2022. But this time around, it looked and felt different.

In December, with Michigan set to return to the College Football Playoff, Harbaugh retained Don Yee, a noted and well-respected NFL agent responsible for orchestrating lucrative contracts for high-profile figures such as Tom Brady and Sean Payton.

The move was a contrast from previous years, when Harbaugh’s name was floated for NFL head-coaching vacancies.

Also unlike previous years, Harbaugh avoided questions pertaining to his future at Michigan and potential NFL interest during the run-up to the Wolverines’ postseason.

He spoke of having a singular focus, “a one-track mind,” ahead of the Wolverines’ Rose Bowl win over Alabama and CFP championship victory over Washington, and being concentrated on happy flights home to Ann Arbor. While some were focused on the future, Harbaugh remained focus on the present.

Harbaugh departs Michigan with three years remaining on the five-year extension he signed in February 2022, a contract that guaranteed him more than $8 million in compensation and retirement benefits.

The two sides were negotiating a contract extension that would have made Harbaugh the highest-paid coach in the Big Ten.

The Michigan coach amassed a record of 86-25 over nine seasons, winning games at more than a 77-percent clip. Under Harbaugh’s leadership, the Wolverines posted six 10-win seasons, captured three Big Ten titles, made three playoff appearances and won a national championship.

Fifty-six players who played on Harbaugh-coached Michigan teams have heard their names drafted by NFL teams, with the Wolverines a real threat to shatter the single-school record of 15 (Georgia, 2022) players drafted this year.

It wasn’t always easy, though. After a disappointing two-year span in which Michigan, a preseason favorite to win the Big Ten, posted a 9-4 record in 2019 and 2-4 mark during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, Harbaugh was under pressure from both the Michigan fanbase and administration.

He made significant changes to his coaching staff, hiring a new defensive coordinator that introduced a sustainable, long-lasting scheme, and returned to his ground-and-pound roots on offense.

The results were noticeable: No longer were the Wolverines just competing for Big Ten superiority, they were beating arch-rival Ohio State and securing an annual spot in the Big Ten title game in Indianapolis.
