Nicknamed “the Great One”, he has been called the greatest hockey player ever by many sportswriters, players, The Hockey News, and by the NHL itself, based on extensive surveys of hockey writers, ex-players, general managers and coaches.
Gretzky is the leading goal scorer, assist producer and point scorer in NHL history, and has more assists in his career than any other player scored total points.
He is the only NHL player to total over 200 points in one season, a feat he accomplished four times.
Wayne Gretzky Empty net goals
Wayne Gretzky has scored the most career empty-net goals, with 56 goals.
ESPN’s John Buccigross posted a controversial opinion on Twitter after Alex Ovechkin scored two empty-net goals against the Philadelphia Flyers, Wednesday.
The goals were Ovechkin’s 794th and 795th of his career, bringing the Capitals captain within 99 tallies of Wayne Gretzky. Gretzky owns the NHL’s goal-scoring record with 894.
Buccigross shared, perhaps tongue-in-cheek, that if Ovechkin is able to reach 893 goals, the Capitals should keep him off the ice when an opposing team’s goalie is pulled so that his record-tying and record-breaking goals are not sullied by being empty netters.
I have no problem with empty net goals but Alex Ovechkin’s 895th, Gretzky record breaking goal can NOT be on an empty netter. Don’t even go on the ice in EN situations once he reaches 894.

The tweet generated a lot of discussion on Hockey Twitter. It also got me thinking.
Several commenters, like former Sabres goaltender Martin Biron, thought the comment was silly and pointed out that Wayne Gretzky set the record for fewest games to 50 goals via an empty netter (39). Gretzky also has the most empty-net goals in NHL history with 56.
Wayne Gretzky Goal record
Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record of 894 career goals was once considered unbreakable. Now, after Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin passed Gordie Howe to move into second place on the NHL’s career goals list, it feels almost inevitable that Ovechkin will surpass Gretzky’s mark — and perhaps by quite a bit.
Here is how the top 10 of the all-time scoring list looks:
- Wayne Gretzky — 894
- Alex Ovechkin — 802
- Gordie Howe — 801
- Jaromir Jagr – 766
- Brett Hull — 741
- Marcel Dionne — 731
- Phil Esposito — 717
- Mike Gartner — 708
- Mark Messier — 694
- Steve Yzerman — 692
“I think a thousand goals is possible for him, especially after what we’ve seen tonight,” former NHL defenseman and ESPN analyst P.K. Subban said this month after Ovechkin recorded a hat trick to become just the third player in NHL history to reach 800 goals. “ … There’s no doubt in my mind that he can hit 900, but I think a thousand is there. Why not?”
One thousand goals might be ambitious, but 895 is attainable for the 37-year-old Ovechkin, who passed Gordie Howe for No. 2 on the all-time list .
Take away his 894 goals and Gretzky would still hold the NHL record for points thanks to his ludicrous 1,963 assists in 1,487 games. With 1,921 points in 246 more games, Jaromir Jagr is a distant second on the career list.
“For me, it’s like number one,” Jagr said after passing Mark Messier for second place in December 2016. “I don’t really count Wayne Gretzky. He was from another planet. I don’t think he was from this planet. Whatever he did, it’s unbreakable.”
Wife
Wayne Gretzky married the gorgeous actress Janet Marie Gretzky on 16 July 1988. The couple met on a show named Dance Fever and hit it off almost immediately.
They officially became a couple just a year back in 1987, and in the next year, Wayne proposed to Janet. They walked down the aisle later that year in July.
Their wedding got broadcasted throughout Canada from St. Joseph’s Basilica, Edmonton. Even after her wedding, Janet continued her occupation as an actress.
Just like Wayne, Janet has a net worth of $10 million approximately, as per thespun.com.
They are both celebrities in their own field, but that has never been a problem in their personal relationship.
