A UFC Welterweight Championship bout between current champion (also The Ultimate Fighter: American Top Team vs. Blackzilians welterweight winner) Kamaru Usman and Leon Edwards is expected to headline the event.
The pairing previously met at UFC on Fox: dos Anjos vs. Cowboy 2 in December 2015 where Usman defeated Edwards by unanimous decision.
A middleweight bout between former Strikeforce and UFC Middleweight Champion Luke Rockhold and former title challenger Paulo Costa was expected to take place at UFC 277.
However, the bout was postponed to this event due to unknown reasons.
Usman vs Edwards 2
Salt Lake City, Utah is ready to host once again a UFC pay-per-view event as UFC 278 will take place this Saturday August 20 at Vivint Arena.
The main event is all set for a rematch between the champion Kamaru Usman and Leon Edwards for the welterweight title, as both fighters balanced the scale at 170 pounds.
Kamaru Usman is regarded not only as the best welterweight fighter but also by many as the best pound for pound fighter in the UFC, but Edwards comes from an impressive 10 win streak and wants to take revenge on the last man that defeated him, you guessed it right, Kamaru Usman.
Usman acknowledges the growth of his opponent, but the champ was quick to point out he’s also evolved since their first fight as well, making clear his intentions of keeping the throne untouched and staying atop the division.
“Leon right now is the biggest, baddest dude in the welterweight division – he poses the greatest threat, which is why I believe he is the No. 1 contender.”, Usman told the media, before adding.
“But as the champion, it’s my job with each and every one of these guys, to let him know that it’s not his time yet.”
Kamaru Usman and Leon Edwards are two welterweights at the top of their game. Usman is searching for his 20th consecutive win while Edwards is looking to avenge his last defeat when the two first met in 2015.
The pair square off once more in the main event of UFC 278, which takes place on Saturday night at Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Usman has emerged as arguably the active pound-for-pound best in MMA while simultaneously creeping up on Georges St-Pierre in the conversation for greatest welterweight of all time.
Edwards had a much quieter path to the world title, flying under the radar and stitching together a 10-fight undefeated streak that could no longer be denied.
Plus, former UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold returns from a three-year layoff to former title challenger Paulo Costa.
Today’s main event will see Kamaru Usman trying to cement his place as the top P4P fighter in the world when he defends his welterweight title against the only guy with a winning streak almost as long as his, Leon Edwards.
The co-main is a grudge match in the middleweight division, with former champ Luke Rockhold returning to the Octagon to take on top contender Paulo Costa.
And on top of that, Jose Aldo will meet Merab Dvalishvili in what should be a 135-pound barnburner.
This post will cover the headliner between Usman and Edwards. The rest of the main card and prelims will be covered in separate posts.
