A UFC Welterweight Championship bout between current champion (also The Ultimate Fighter: American Top Team vs. Blackzilians welterweight winner) Kamaru Usman and Leon Edwards headlined the event.

The pairing previously met at UFC on Fox: dos Anjos vs. Cowboy 2 in December 2015 where Usman defeated Edwards by unanimous decision.

A middleweight bout between former Strikeforce and UFC Middleweight Champion Luke Rockhold and former title challenger Paulo Costa was expected to take place at UFC 277.

However, the bout was postponed to this event due to unknown reasons.

Leon Edwards waited for his opportunity at a title shot. Delays, opponent changes and a pandemic all halted his attempt at gold. Once he finally received his shot, “Rocky” made the most of it.

Edwards knocked out Kamaru Usman to win the UFC welterweight title at UFC 278 in Salt Lake City on Saturday.

He landed a perfectly timed kick to Usman’s face after he was considered down and out in the fight.

“I told you I could do it. Look at me now,” Edwards said after the fight. “Pound for pound what?”

Edwards was ready to prove he was a different fighter than he was when he lost to Usman in 2015.

He did that early in the first round when he became the first fighter to take Usman down in his career. It was a shocking moment in front of a packed crowd at Vivint Arena.

Live score

The official scorecards from the UFC 278 main event between Leon Edwards and Kamaru Usman lay bare the enormity of Edwards’ amazing knockout comeback.

Edwards was down 3-1 against Usman going into the fifth round, making his head-kick stoppage of the pound-for-pound great all the more impressive on Saturday at Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City.

Just as clear as Edwards’ victory was the score heading into that fifth round. All three judges – Sal D’Amato, Derek Cleary and Chris Lee – had the same tallies heading into the final frame.

Each gave Edwards the first round 10-9 for his impressive start and awarded Usman Rounds 2-4 by the score of 10-9 for his smothering, grinding control in the octagon.
