He has played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Colorado Rockies, San Francisco Giants, Pittsburgh Pirates, Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Dodgers.
He played college baseball for the University of Oregon. The Rockies selected Anderson in the first round, with the 20th overall selection, of the 2011 MLB draft. He made his MLB debut in 2016.
Tyler Anderson Signs with Angels
The Los Angeles Angels have bolstered their rotation by agreeing to a deal with free-agent left-hander Tyler Anderson, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Anderson, who spent last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, will sign a three-year deal worth $39 million, a source told Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.
He’ll earn $13 million in each year of the agreement, reports Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.
News of the contract came moments before the 4 p.m. ET deadline for Anderson to accept or decline the Dodgers’ $19.65-million qualifying offer.
Because he had been tendered the qualifying offer, the Halos will forfeit their second-round pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, while the Dodgers gain a compensation pick after the fourth round, according to Passan.
The 32-year-old joined the Dodgers on a one-year deal late in spring training and rewarded them with a surprisingly excellent 2022 season that was easily the best of his career.
Anderson earned his first career All-Star nod and posted a 2.57 ERA, 3.31 FIP, and 1.00 WHIP with 138 strikeouts in 30 appearances (28 starts) for the 111-win Dodgers.
Tyler Anderson contract
The deal is reportedly around the $39 million range. Anderson turned down a one-year $19.65 million offer to return to the Dodgers. He now joins a staff anchored by Shohei Ohtani.
The rotation wasn’t considered as much of a need this offseason after Angels starters posted the sixth-best ERA in the Majors last season, but they wanted to add at least one starter with general manager Perry Minasian confirming the club will stick with a six-man rotation next year.
Anderson was considered one of the better starting pitchers available in free agency, and being able to acquire him is a sign that the Angels will continue to operate as usual this offseason despite owner Arte Moreno exploring a sale.
Anderson is slated to join a rotation that includes two-way star Shohei Ohtani and young lefties Patrick Sandoval, José Suarez and Reid Detmers.
The last spot is up for grabs, with candidates including Jaime Barria, Chase Silseth and Tucker Davidson, as well as Griffin Canning and Chris Rodriguez, who both missed last season due to injuries. Right-hander Michael Lorenzen is also a free agent and has expressed interest in returning to the Angels.
Stats
The Rockies selected Anderson in the first round, with the 20th overall selection, of the 2011 MLB draft, and he signed for a signing bonus of $1.4 million.

On October 30, 2019, Anderson was claimed off waivers by the San Francisco Giants. On December 2, Anderson was non-tendered and became a free agent.
The following day, on December 3, Anderson re-signed with the Giants on a one-year major league contract.
The contract called for a $1.775 million salary plus $500,000 in possible roster bonuses and $350,000 in possible performance bonuses based on number of innings pitched.
On March 18, 2022, Anderson signed a one-year contract for $8 million with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
He made his first appearance in relief on April 9 against his first team, the Colorado Rockies. After beginning the season in the bullpen, Anderson moved into the starting rotation when Andrew Heaney went down with an arm injury.
After starting the season 10–1 with a 2.96 ERA, he was selected for the 2022 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, though he did not appear in the game.
