Trevor Bauer suspended
It seems that Trevor Bauer derailed his career as quickly as he rose to superstardom.
The controversial pitcher of the Los Angeles Dodgers was handed a 324-game suspension by the MLB after he was accused of sexually assaulting, choking, and hitting a woman during two sexual encounters.
Bauer’s downfall continued on Wednesday, losing twice in the courtroom. A judge denied his attempt to have the accuser’s countersuit thrown out, while also dismissing a grievance against one of his former attorneys.
The suspension, which covers two full MLB seasons, is the longest punishment under the sport’s domestic violence policy since it was instituted in August 2015.
Since their establishment, 15 players have been suspended under the joint domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse policy.
Trevor Bauer will not be eligible to play until the 19th game of the 2024 season. However, it won’t come as a surprise if teams decide to pass on him in the future.
Given the backlash teams have faced when signing a troubled star, Trevor Bauer may have already thrown his final pitch in the Majors. He was a polarizing figure even before the suspension and his recent actions have further tarnished his image.
Why is Trevor Bauer suspended
In 2020, Trevor Bauer was a Cy Young winner and ended up signing with the defending champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers.
He was poised to enjoy a strong stint there and perhaps help them repeat and win more championships.
However, he hasn’t appeared in a game in a very long time. He was suspended by Major League Baseball after a woman claimed Bauer assaulted her, according to Dodger Blue.
It was alleged that the pitcher sexually assaulted the woman and as a result, MLB suspended him pending an investigation. The investigation took a while and the indefinite suspension kept getting extended.
He’s been suspended since midway through the 2021 MLB season, when he sported a 2.59 ERA in 17 games with the Dodgers.
In May of this year, the MLB concluded its investigation and decided that the pitcher should not play a game until a few weeks into the 2024 season. By then, his contract with the Dodgers will have expired.
The suspension isn’t concrete as he did not accept the ruling and could appeal, but right now, it’s a total of 324 games.
