If there was one sequence we saw over and over in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, it was Trea Turner circling the bases in Wbc.

Developed by the Padres and Nationals primarily as a shortstop, Turner broke into the major leagues in the 2016 season as Washington’s starting center fielder, before returning to what he considers his “natural position” as the Nationals shortstop in the 2017 season.

He has also made a handful of major league appearances at second base.

Turner is one of the fastest runners in Major League Baseball, having been clocked at 22.7 miles per hour (36.5 km/h) at least twice in 2016.

On June 30, 2021, Turner hit for the cycle for the third time, tying the MLB record for most cycles in a career.

The United States was in danger of a major disappointment, but Trea Turner flipped the narrative quickly.

The now Philadelphia Phillies star, on an 0-2 pitch down two in the eighth, blasted a grand slam that proved to be the game-winner that sent Team USA to the World Baseball Classic.

The United States defeated the 4-0 Venezuelans, 9-7.

Team USA got off to a hot start, as their first five batters of the ballgame each got a hit, and it was 3-0 USA before they even recorded an out.

But Venezuela got on the board quickly – as the home team in the game (and, despite the game being played in Miami, the crowd sure showed it was a home game for the South American country), defending batting champion Luis Arraez drilled a two-run homer to make it a 3-2 game in the first.

USA scored in the top of the fourth and fifth, but Venezuela put up four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-5 lead. Arraez blasted his second homer of the night  In the sixth to put his squad up two.

However, the U.S. loaded the bases with none out, and José Quijada, shortly after a lively celebration to get out of a jam the previous inning, surrendered the 407-foot bomb to left field.

Trea Turner went full Captain America on Saturday night.

The Philadelphia Phillies shortstop was the catalyst for the United States in the team’s 9-7 victory over Venezuela in the quarterfinals of the 2023 World Baseball Classic at loanDepot Park in Miami.

With the U.S. trailing Venezuela 7-5 following a solo home run by Luis Arraez in the bottom of the seventh inning, Turner hit a grand slam in the top of the eighth inning to put the Americans on top 9-7.

Oh, and he was down 0-2 in the count when he launched one into the left field stands, making it that much more impressive.

Unfortunately for Team USA, they were unable to put more runs on the board after Turner’s long ball. Even more unfortunate, the Americans quickly gave up a solo home run to Japan off the bat of Munetaka Murakami.

The good news is that Trea Turner will come around in the lineup soon and, if what we’ve seen in the knockout rounds is any indication, the fans in left field of loanDepot Park will be getting a souvenir, courtesy of the new Captain America.
