Growing up in Herisau, Switzerland, Meier began playing ice hockey at a young age. At the age of 15, he accepted an apprenticeship position with the SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers, a National A League team in Switzerland, where he observed and learned from David Aebischer and Jason Spezza.
After completing the 2012–13 season in his native Switzerland with the U17 SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers, Meier was selected 12th overall by the Halifax Mooseheads in the 2013 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft.
Meier spent three seasons with the Mooseheads before being traded to the Rouyn–Noranda Huskies to complete his major junior ice hockey career.
After being selected ninth overall by the Sharks in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Meier became the third Swiss player in franchise history to be drafted by the team.

The New Jersey Devils have acquired scoring forward Timo Meier from the San Jose Sharks, the team announced Sunday.
As part of the deal, New Jersey also receives Timur Ibragimov, Scott Harrington, Santeri Hatakka, Zachary Emond and a 2024 fifth-round pick.
In return, San Jose gets Andreas Johnsson, Fabian Zetterlund, Nikita Okhotyuk, Shakir Mukhamadullin, a 2023 conditional first-round pick, a 2024 conditional second-round pick and a seventh-round pick in 2024.
The Sharks will retain 50 per cent of Meier’s salary.
The Swiss-born Meier was second on the rebuilding Sharks in scoring this season, with 52 points (31 goals, 21 assists) in 57 games.
Picked ninth overall in the 2015 NHL Draft by the Sharks, Meier has 154 goals and 162 assists for 316 points in 451 career games with San Jose.
Listed at 6-foot-1 and 220 pounds, Meier uses his solid frame to hold off defenders in front of the net and along the boards.
“What separates Meier from prototypical power forwards is his mobility,” wrote Sportsnet analyst Adam Vingan. “Meier … is at his best when pushing the pace. When Meier is on the ice, high-event hockey is the norm.”
Meier, 26, will be a restricted free agent this off-season after his four-year, $24-million deal expires.
Trade rumors
Meier is a 26-year-old forward who is on an expiring restricted free-agent deal. He is arbitration-eligible but is seeking an extension. Not that the Red Wings are going to dish out the money, as they have their own extension talks to worry about with Dylan Larkin, he’s a player that could be brought in for the mad dash at the postseason.
Maybe a move of Tyler Bertuzzi down the line could turn into a spot for Meier, but the problem would become cap space down the line.
The Sharks forward is reportedly seeking a contract with figures similar to what Larkin is looking for.
But, the novelty idea of bringing in Meier before the deadline to be all-in is worth discussing.
Meier is a big part of the Sharks’ offense, so it’s no shock he wants to get paid. He has 31 goals and 21 assists for 52 total points over 57 games played.
According to an article from a few weeks back, Bob Heyrman detailed what it might cost to acquire Meier from the Sharks. He mentions a first-round pick, a Grade-A prospect, and a Grade-B prospect being the likeliest of outcomes.
Again, back on earth and in reality, the Red Wings will not shell out that much. It’s doubtful that Meier is the best fit for Detroit, given their situation.
Cautious additions with low risk with the least amount of capital given up are going to be the moves that make sense.
But with all the momentum on the Red Wings’ side, as they keep moving in the right direction, it’s hard not to tempt fate and look at some of the possibilities if they really go all in.
