Bradshaw was born in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1948. His father, William Marvin “Bill” Bradshaw (1927–2014), a native of Sparta, Tennessee, was a veteran of the United States Navy, a former vice president of manufacturing of the Riley Beaird Company in Shreveport, and a Southern Baptist layman.

One day, just before the 2008 housing crash occurred, he came home sick to his stomach and could not figure out why.
