Australia has a promising new batting hope, with Western Australia’s Teague Wyllie becoming the youngest player to score a Sheffield Shield century since Ricky Ponting.

And it came on a tricky wicket for batters, with Wyllie’s 104 leading the hosts to a total of 258, and a 78-run lead at stumps on day two of their clash with New South Wales.

Only NSW captain Kurtis Patterson (72 not out) and WA’s Matthew Kelly (47 not out) were able to join the 18-year-old in scoring over 32 runs.

In the process Wyllie, who was in his third Shield match, became the youngest to ton up at the level since Ricky Ponting in 1992/93.

Wyllie made his first-class debut on 23 March 2022, for Western Australia in the penultimate match of the 2021–22 Sheffield Shield season, where he scored 42 runs in the first innings.

He became the youngest cricketer to make his first-class debut for Western Australia since Cameron Green made his debut in February 2017.

Teenager Teague Wyllie has struck his maiden first-class century to put Western Australia in the box seat in their Marsh Sheffield Shield clash with NSW at the WACA Ground. 

WA were bowled out for 258 in the final act of day two, giving them a lead of 78 after NSW were rolled for 180 on day one.

On a tricky pitch where only one other batter has reached 50 thus far, Wyllie was a class above, cracking 15 boundaries on the way to 104 off 204 balls.

West Australian teenager Teague Wyllie has become the Sheffield Shield’s youngest centurion since the legendary Ricky Ponting after a breakthrough knock against New South Wales on Tuesday.

Playing in just his third first-class match, Wyllie scored a classy 104 to help guide the Warriors to a first-innings total of 258 on a tricky WACA deck.

The talented right-hander brought up triple figures late in the evening session by clipping Test off-spinner Nathan Lyon through fine leg, becoming Western Australia’s youngest centurion in Sheffield Shield history.

At 18 years and 163 days, only six cricketers have scored a Sheffield Shield century at a younger age than Wyllie, the most recent being Ponting at 18 years and 40 days during the 1992/93 summer.

Brother and sister, Teague and Georgia Wyllie are Mandurah Cricket Club team-mates and now both will represent their state for the first time, be in different teams.

Fourteen-year-old Georgia will travel to Hobart later this month after gaining selection in the Western Australia under 15 national girls team.

The pace bowler was scouted by a WACA representative during one of her games with the Mandurah Cricket Club under 13s boys team.

Georgia said she plays with the boys as the girl’s competition isn’t as strong.

“I’ve been playing with the boys for four years so they’re used to it,” she said.

“When I first started some wouldn’t shake my hand.
