It has long been reported Lewan could be a cap casualty as the new league year approaches, and the team has reportedly told Lewan he is being released.
At this stage, many fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly wondering if Lewan might be a good fit in a black and gold uniform.
Lewan being released would certainly be Step No. 1 in the process, but the biggest issue is Lewan’s overall health.
When healthy, he is a top tier tackle in the league, but he is coming off another knee injury which will have his overall availability unknown for the 2023 season.
It is unlikely anyone takes the risk of bringing in Lewan without a general feeling he is healthy enough to play when the season starts next fall.
But that wasn’t the only player released from Tennessee Wednesday. Jordan Schultz is reporting the Titans have released wide receiver Robert Woods.
Let the speculation begin, as it pertains to the Steelers potential interest in either of these two established NFL veterans. In the meantime, the Steelers are preparing for the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine, the start of the new league year on March 13th and the 2023 NFL draft.

The offensive tackle now joins Las Vegas Raiders star QB Derek Carr early on the NFL free-agent market, and like Carr, Lewan is sure to garner a great deal of interest from around the league despite only playing in 20 games over the last three seasons.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at four teams with a bunch of cap space and a need for a proven tackle that is likely to give Taylor Lewan a call in the next few weeks.
The Chicago Bears have the most available cap space this offseason and have a dire need for better blockers after Justin Fields was the most sacked quarterback in the NFC last season.
Furthermore, the Bears were a dominant running squad last season and surely could use a piece from the outstanding Titans rushing offenses to bolster one of their few strengths in 2023.
Even though the Seattle Seahawks surprised last season and reached the NFL Playoffs, the team still needs to make some major upgrades to the offensive line after Geno Smith was one of the most sacked signal-callers in the AFC last season.
They also have a great deal of cap space to fill a key need without having to make space under their salary cap.
The Houston Texans will have a rookie QB starting for them in 2023, and aside from a good running game, a talented offensive line is a young quarterback’s best friend.
The team already has a good tackle in Laremy Tunsil on the roster. Adding another to bookend their offensive line and give their future franchise QB as much time as possible would be a good start for the new DeMeco Ryans regime as head coach.
College
Lewan enrolled at the University of Michigan, where he majored in general studies, and redshirted his freshman year.
Although Lewan did not play in the 2010 season opener, he appeared in 11 games, including nine as a starter, during the 2010 season.
In 2010, he took over the starting left tackle role from Mark Huyge in the fourth game versus Bowling Green.
Michigan’s offense displayed one of the top rushing attacks in the country, with quarterback Denard Robinson as the team’s leading rusher behind protection by Lewan and fellow offensive linemen David Molk, Patrick Omameh, Steven Schilling, and Perry Dorrestein.
Prior to the 2012 season, Lewan was selected by the media as one of five Big Ten Offensive players to watch along with teammate Denard Robinson as voted by the media.
Following the season, he was named the Big Ten Conference Offensive Lineman of the Year and named to the All-Big Ten first team by both the coaches and the media.
After the 2013 season, Lewan was named Big Ten Conference Offensive Lineman of the Year for the second season in a row.
