He occasionally served as stand-in captain for Indian men’s national cricket team during the absence of the main captain also he played for Uttarpradesh (UP) in domestic cricket circuit.

Raina is an aggressive left-handed middle-order batsman and an occasional off-spin bowler and  is the second-youngest player ever to captain India.

He was the captain of Gujarat Lions in the Indian Premier League (IPL) , and he also served as vice-captain of the Chennai Super Kings.

Raina is the first Indian batsman to hit a century in all three formats of international cricket.

Suresh Raina, who has not been picked by the franchise at the Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction, earlier this year will ply his trade in the different T20 leagues across the globe.

On Tuesday, he made the announcement on Twitter by saying, “It has been an absolute honour to represent my country & state UP.

I would like to announce my retirement from all formats of Cricket.” The southpaw has decided to bid adieu to the IPL and will play in T20 leagues in South Africa, Sri Lanka and UAE. Raina will not play for Uttar Pradesh in the upcoming domestic season.

Earlier, Raina was quoted by news daily Dainik Jagran saying, “I want to continue playing cricket for two or three years. There are some exciting youngsters who are coming through the ranks of Uttar Pradesh cricket.

I have already taken my No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA). I have informed BCCI secretary Jay Shah and vice-president Rajiv Shukla about my decision.”

Retirement 

As soon as Suresh Raina’s retirement tweet surfaced on the internet, fans flooded Twitter with ‘will miss you’ posts.

Many Raina fans even urged him to take back his decision while others said that they will wait to see him in overseas T20 leagues.

Earlier, the 35-year-old former Indian batter had followed M S Dhoni into international retirement on August 15, 2020. He continued playing the IPL in 2021 but was released by Chennai Super Kings ahead of the 2022 season.

In his tweet, Suresh Raina said, “It has been an absolute honour to represent my country & state UP. I would like to announce my retirement from all formats of cricket.” He also thanked BCCI, Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association and CSK.

During the semi-final of 2011 Cricket World Cup, Raina batted with tailenders to score an unbeaten 36, a significant contribution to India’s final tally of 260.

During the 2014 Bangladesh series, he led his team to a 2–0 victory in the series. During the 2nd match of the series, India was all out for 105 runs while batting first. Suresh Raina and his young team defended 105 runs and eventually won the match by 47 runs.

Raina announced his retirement from all formats of international cricket on 15 August 2020, minutes after the retirement of Mahendra Singh Dhoni (known as Mahi).

On Instagram, Raina said “It was nothing but lovely playing with you, @mahi7781. With my heart full of pride, I choose to join you in your journey. Thank you India. Jai Hind.”

Net worth 

He is considered to be a T20 specialist and has a net worth of around $25 million (INR 175 crore).

Suresh Raina is currently placed in the C Grade of BCCI retainership contract and is paid a yearly sum of INR 1 crore. Apart from that, he receives a match fee of INR 35000 per match for domestic matches as a member of the senior team.

For playing in the international matches, Suresh Raina receives INR 15 lakh per Test, INR 6 lakh per ODI and INR 3 lakh per T20I played by him from the BCCI.
