He had minimal impact and was traded to the Dallas Mavericks in 1998. By his fourth season with the Mavericks, he was voted to his first NBA All-Star Game and earned his first All-NBA selection.

Together with Dirk Nowitzki and Michael Finley, Nash led the Mavericks to the Western Conference Finals the following season.

He became a free agent after the 2003–04 season and returned to the Phoenix Suns.

Career history
As player:
        1996–1998         Phoenix Suns
1998–2004 Dallas Mavericks
2004–2012 Phoenix Suns
2012–2015 Los Angeles Lakers
As coach:
2020–present Brooklyn Nets

Nash led the Nets to an Eastern Conference-best record of 9–4 during the month, including a conference-best 5–2 road record. Nash led the Nets to a 48–24 record in his first season as head coach.

After the 2020–21 regular season Nash finished in sixth place in the NBA Coach of the Year voting.

Nash was praised for his playmaking, ball-handling skills and shooting. He led the league in assists for five years, averaging 11.5 assists per game in 2004–05, 10.5 in 2005–06, 11.6 in 2006–07, 11.0 in 2009–10 and 11.4 in 2010–11[16] and won the NBA Skills Challenge in 2005 and 2010.

The Nets hired Nash in 2020 to lead the rebuild around Durant and Kyrie Irving, who both joined the franchise the previous season, Kenny Atkinson’s last as head coach.

The hiring arrived as a surprise around the NBA as Nash — a Hall of Fame point guard — had no prior head coaching experience when he took over a team built to compete for NBA championships.

The Nets are 92-62 under Nash and haven’t advanced beyond the Eastern Conference semifinals in his two seasons.

Marks took over as general manager in 2016 under previous owner Mikhail Prokhorov. He oversaw the acquisition of Durant and Irving.

He also brokered the trade to acquire James Harden from the Houston Rockets and the subsequent deadline deal last season that sent Harden to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Ben Simmons.

Simmons did not play for Brooklyn last season amid myriad issues, including a lingering back injury.

Tumult has surrounded the Nets since their first-round playoff exit with Durant and Irving’s status with the team moving forward unclear. Irving’s refusal to meet New York’s COVID-19 vaccine standards led him to be frequently sidelined and was partially blamed for derailing the Nets’ season.

Marks said after the season that he wants players who can “be available” while casting doubt over Irving’s future with the team.

Kevin Durant

In a face-to-face meeting with Brooklyn Nets owner Joe Tsai over the weekend, All-NBA star Kevin Durant reiterated his trade request and informed Tsai that he needs to choose between Durant or the pairing of general manager Sean Marks and coach Steve Nash, sources with direct knowledge of the meeting tell The Athletic.

Durant stated he does not have faith in the team’s direction, sources said.

Durant and Tsai spoke in London on Saturday and sources described the discussion as transparent and professional.

The meeting took place a year to the day that Durant agreed to a four-year, $198 million contract extension with the Nets and barely over a month after his initial trade request on June 30. He is now entering the first season of that extension.

The Nets have direct knowledge of the reasons behind Durant’s request, sources said, and understand that the 12-time All-Star will continue to be resolute in his stance.

Durant is believed to want a change of scenery heading into his 16th season.
