There’s optimism that star point guard Steph Curry will return during the team’s three-game road trip next week, ESPN reported Wednesday.
Their road trip begins Sunday against the Los Angeles Lakers and concludes on March 9 against the Memphis Grizzlies.
Curry suffered partial tears to a pair of ligaments in his lower left leg on Feb. 4. He was recently re-evaluated, and the team announced he was making good progress.
Curry has increased his practice workload and is now taking part in scrimmages, and his next steps will be determined base on how his injured leg responds, the team added.
Curry suffered the injury in the second half of the Warriors’ win over the Dallas Mavericks, forcing him to miss the last nine games. Golden State hasn’t fared too poorly without Curry, going 5-4 since he has been sidelined.
As a result, the Warriors have improved their standing in the Western Conference, sitting fifth in the conference at 32-30.
However, there’s not much breathing room in the middle of the Western Conference standings. There are only 4.5 games separating the fourth seed and the 13th seed in the conference.
Golden State has the eighth-toughest remaining schedule in the league entering Wednesday.
“That’s the hope,” President of basketball operations Bob Myers said on 95.7 The Game. Because “I think the reason why we can’t give you more definitive information is it is kind of predicated on how he feels. Also Can he get up to the workload.”
The 34-year-old has taken major strides and participated in more contact work in recent days, including a scrimmage with Andre Iguodala and some Warriors backups on Tuesday morning at Chase Center.
Curry participated in light non-contact work following the All-Star break. Also he was spotted back on the practice courts, getting shots up after team practice in San Francisco on Monday.
During Curry’s injury, the Warriors have also been dealing with Andrew Wiggins’ mysterious absence as he deals with family issues away from the team with no timeline to return.
The 28-year-old wing has missed five games and been away from the team for 12 days, including the All-Star break. Also Myers said he doesn’t expect Wiggins out for an extended amount of time or the rest of the season.
Golden State is on a three-game win streak following a comeback victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday, finding its stride defensively while awaiting Curry’s return.
Still, the Warriors are 12-12 without Curry this season and 5-4 in the nine games he has missed with this injury. He missed 11 games earlier this season with a shoulder injury.
