A four-year varsity starter, he was considered to be one of the top four or five players nationally his senior year, and led his team to the state championship finals.
Kemp ended his high school career as Elkhart County’s all-time leading scorer and the owner of Concord’s career, single-game and single-season scoring records.
Despite his achievements and accolades, Kemp was bypassed for the title of Indiana Mr. Basketball as Woody Austin won the award that year instead.

Shawn Kemp, a perennial NBA all-star during his years with the Seattle SuperSonics, has been arrested in connection with a drive-by shooting.
Kemp was booked into the Pierce County Jail in Washington Wednesday an hour after the shooting.
Police said a confrontation between the occupants of two cars in a parking lot near the Tacoma Mall was the origin of the shooting. A gun was recovered, but no injuries were reported.
Kemp, a power forward, spent eight seasons in Seattle, retiring after spending the 2002-2003 season with the Orlando Magic. Kemp played a total of 14 seasons for Seattle, the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Portland Trail Blazers, and the Magic.
The Seattle franchise moved to Oklahoma after the 2007-2008 season and became the Oklahoma City Thunder.
He averaged 14.6 points and 8.4 rebounds per game in his career after being the 17th overall pick in the 1989 NBA Draft.

Former Sonics player Shawn Kemp was booked into the Pierce County Jail Wednesday on investigation of a drive-by shooting.
The Pierce County Jail roster lists a Shawn Travis Kemp with the same birthday as the former basketball player currently booked into the facility.
Kemp was a six-time NBA all-star and played for the Sonics from 1989 to 1997. He is also a prominent Seattle businessman, owning two cannabis stores, one in Belltown and the other in SODO.
Police responded to a shooting following an altercation between two groups of people at the Tacoma Mall around 2 p.m. on Wednesday.
However, police have not confirmed whether or not this is the incident Kemp is believed to be involved with.
Police were called to the mall after reports of shots being fired between the two groups in two separate vehicles.
One of the drivers fired off several rounds at the occupants of the other vehicle. No injuries were reported.
The victim’s vehicle fled the area, according to police.
Officers found the suspect who fired off the shots at Tacoma Mall property and detained him without incident. A gun was recovered from the scene.
The 53-year-old suspect was booked into jail for drive-by-shooting.
