Shaquem was born with amniotic band syndrome affecting his left hand, causing his fingers on his left hand not to fully develop.
The pain was so intense that at 4 years of age he grabbed a butcher knife, planning to cut the hand off. His mother took the knife away, and his parents scheduled an amputation the next day.
Still, Griffin was able to continue playing sports without his left hand, competing in track, baseball, and football alongside his brother.
Draft
The Seahawks selected Central Florida linebacker Shaquem Griffin in the fifth round (141st overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft.
Griffin, who lost his left hand at the age of 4 because of a rare condition before birth, quickly became an inspiration to others with disabilities.
“That was the phone call I was waiting my entire life,” Griffin said regarding the call he received from Seahawks general manager John Schneider when he was drafted. “I literally broke down after that. I couldn’t breathe and I didn’t know how to talk, I mean, I was just lost for words.”
The 6-foot, 227-pound Griffin dazzled at the NFL Scouting Combine with a blistering 4.38 time in the 40-yard dash, which ranked first among linebackers present in Indianapolis. He also posted 20 repetitions on the bench-press event.

Madden
Shaquem Griffin doesn’t have a left hand. He was born with a condition that prevented it from developing fully, and his parents later had it amputated.
That hasn’t stopped him from playing in the NFL, where he is a second-year linebacker for the Seattle Seahawks.
And it also doesn’t stop him from making one-handed catches. With his left arm. In Madden NFL 20.
But this does point out how bonkers, if not routine, one-handed catches have become in Madden since Odell Beckham Jr. graced the cover of Madden NFL 16 four years ago.
Shaquem Griffin brother
When newly signed Jaguars cornerback Shaquill Griffin found out that he would be playing in Jacksonville, his brother, Shaquem, may have been more happy than he was.
Shaquill will earn $14.8 million per year, putting him seventh among cornerbacks in the league. The former third-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft was a starter each season with the Seahawks and progressed each year.
The 2019 season, however, was a breakout year for him, earning Pro Bowl honors as Seattle’s top cornerback and garnering 13 pass breakups.
“He indeed lost his breakfast late on Tuesday after the big news,” Breer said.
As for Shaquill, when he got the call from his agent Buddy Baker, he was in shock.
