Turning professional in 1995, she won her first major singles title at the 1999 US Open. The next few years saw her claim two more singles majors, but suffer from injury and decline in form.

American tennis great Serena Williams has said she plans to retire, possibly after the US Open tournament which begins later this month.

In a post on Instagram on Tuesday, Williams was not completely clear on the timeline, but the line “next few weeks” indicated it could be after the US Open.

There comes a time in life when we have to decide to move in a different direction. That time is always hard when you love something so much. My goodness do I enjoy tennis. But now, the countdown has begun.

I have to focus on being a mom, my spiritual goals and finally discovering a different, but just exciting Serena. I’m gonna relish these next few weeks,” she wrote.

The 40-year-old has won 23, the most major singles championships in the professional era of tennis, which began in 1968.

Over the last five years she has been chasing the elusive 24th title that would draw her level with Australian Margaret Court’s record.
