Seahawks hire Mike Macdonald as NFL’s youngest head coach.
The Seattle Seahawks have their new head coach. Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald has been hired as Pete Carroll’s successor, reportedly agreeing to a six-year deal that will make him the NFL’s youngest head coach at 36 years old.
Macdonald drew plenty of praise for returning Baltimore’s defense to elite status after they dipped to 28th by DVOA in 2021.
In two seasons as DC, the Ravens ranked 8th by DVOA in 2022 and then number one in 2023. The Ravens defense had the fewest points allowed, most sacks, and most takeaways.
Macdonald, a former defensive assistant for his alma mater at the University of Georgia, had been with the Ravens since 2014 when he started as a coaching intern two years removed from Baltimore’s Super Bowl victory over the San Francisco 49ers.
He moved up to defensive assistant, defensive backs coach and eventually linebackers coach in 2018 before departing back to the college ranks to play for the other Harbaguh as the defensive coordinator at Michigan for one season in 2021.
The Ravens hired Macdonald back as their defensive coordinator last season, and the move clearly paid off. During the 2023 regular season, Baltimore’s defense posted a league-leading 60 sacks and allowed the sixth-fewest offensive yards per game (301.4).
The Seahawks are turning the page from Carroll to Macdonald despite a respectable 9-8 season. Seattle was one of the league’s most consistent teams under Carroll, never finishing with fewer than seven wins and making the postseason 10 times in 14 seasons.
Macdonald will join a team with several talented pieces on both sides of the ball. The offense is led by veteran quarterback Geno Smith, running back Kenneth Walker and receivers DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
On defense, Seattle has a pair of talented young cornerbacks in Devon Witherspoon and Riq Woolen and a safety duo of Quandre Diggs and Julian Love.
