The 24-year-old Saivion Smith was down when medical workers arrived to check him while he was playing his 1st defensive snaps of season.

Smith attended Lakewood High School. He transferred to IMG Academy after his sophomore season. As a junior, he had 67 tackles, 5 interceptions and 4 fumble recoveries.

As a senior, he tallied 43 tackles, one pass defensed, one blocked punt and three blocked field goals. He received USA Today All-USA High School All-American honors. He was considered a four-star prospect according to Rivals.com.

Smith was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Jacksonville Jaguars after the 2019 NFL Draft on April 27, after dropping because of his 40-yard times at the NFL Scouting Combine. He was waived on August 30.

In 2020, he was selected in the XFL Supplemental Draft by the Houston Roughnecks. He had 8 tackles and one pass defensed in the first two games. 

Injury 

Detroit Lions player Saivion Smith left the pitch in an ambulance after injuring his neck in his side’s NFL match with the New England Patriots on Sunday.

Smith, 24, was taken to a local hospital to be evaluated – with his dad called down from the stands amid worrying scenes. Medics on the field brought out a stabilising board for the corner back before putting him in the ambulance.

During the first quarter, Smith was trying to cover Patriots tight end Henry Hunter when he hit the ground, despite the contact between the pair appearing minimal. As staff tended to him, teammates and opponents gathered around the player.

The Tampa born star was making his first NFL start for the Lions, having been waived by the San Franciso 49ers in December.

And after the Pro Football Network Twitter account posted footage of the incident, well wishes poured in for the ex-IMG Academy star.

Detroit Lions safety Saivion Smith suffered a serious injury on Sunday afternoon at Gillette Stadium. Sunday should have been an exciting day for Saivion Smith. He got the first start of his NFL career at safety against the New England Patriots.

In the first quarter, he was assigned to cover Patriots tight end Hunter Henry. During the play in question, there was little contact between the two before Smith fell to the ground.

Both the Detroit Lions and New England Patriots medical teams came out to assist the 24-year-old. He initially wasn’t moving while laying on the field. Medical staff then put him on a backboard and stretcher.

An ambulance was brought onto the field and Smith’s family also ran down to his side, riding with him to a local hospital for further evaluation.

The Detroit Lions later reported that the safety had a neck injury but that he did have movement in all of his extremities, which is a positive sign.

This is the latest serious injury in just the first five weeks of the NFL season. The league has been adamant about adhering to protocols, especially when it comes to head and neck injuries.

40 time

On December 14, 2021, Smith was claimed off waivers by the Detroit Lions.

He was released on January 6, 2022 and re-signed to the practice squad. He signed a reserve/future contract with the Lions on January 10, 2022.

On April 10, 2020, he was signed as a free agent by the Dallas Cowboys. On August 1, he was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list, and was activated eight days later. He was waived on September 5, 2020 and signed to the practice squad the next day.

On September 26, he was promoted to the active roster to replace an injured Chidobe Awuzie. He was waived on October 20, and re-signed to the practice squad two days later.

He was elevated to the active roster on October 31, November 7, December 8, and December 12 for the team’s weeks 8, 9, 13, and 14 games against the Philadelphia Eagles, Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, and Cincinnati Bengals, and reverted to the practice squad after each game.

On December 19, 2020, he was placed on the practice squad/injured list and on January 4, 2021, he signed a reserve/future contract.

On May 5, 2021, he was waived after the Cowboys used eight of their 11 selections in the 2021 NFL Draft on defensive players.
