The 6-foot-6, 275-pound Keeler played in two games for the Rebels, totaling eight tackles and one sack. He earned his first collegiate sack only last October when facing off against Air Force.

This isn’t the first time that a University of Nevada student has died in a shocking manner. Nathan Valencia, a University of Nevada, Los Angeles student, died on Nov. 19, 2021, after taking part in the fraternity’s amateur fight night fundraising event.

Last season, the Nazareth Academy graduate moved from Rutgers University to UNLV. He played in seven games and made eight tackles.

He was highly sought after and got dozens of scholarship offers right out of high school and he was studying business and had a 3.80 GPA.

UNLV defensive lineman Ryan Keeler died on Monday, the university said in a statement. He was 20.

As a redshirt freshman last season, Keeler played in seven games. The Chicago native made his first start in October in a game against Air Force where he recorded seven tackles and a sack.

“We are devastated to have lost a member of our Rebel family,” UNLV football head coach Barry Odom, who was hired in December, said in a statement. “While I had the honor of knowing Ryan for only a couple of months, he already stood out to our coaching staff as an incredible person, student and teammate. Our condolences and prayers go out to Ryan’s family as we grieve along with them over this tremendous loss.”  

“My heart hurts with the loss of Ryan Keeler,” former UNLV defensive line coach Bojay Filimoeatu said on Twitter. “You were a great young man and one of the hardest workers I have coached. I will forever cherish the time we had together my man. My prayers are with your beautiful family and teammates. Ofa Lahi Atu @ryankeeler71 #FlyHigh47”

“Long Live Ryan Keeler gone way too soon I’m lost for words right now love you forever brother,” fellow defensive lineman Adam Plant Jr. wrote on Twitter with a black heart and dove emoji.

Keeler transferred to UNLV from Rutgers in the 2022 offseason. He played high school football at Nazareth Academy (Illinois). Both programs paid tribute to their former player on social media.

Keeler transferred to UNLV from Rutgers before last season.

Rutgers coach Greg Schiano said in a statement, “From getting to know him as a recruit, to actually getting to coach him, what stood out most was his passion. His passion for his teammates and his passion for the game of football. We send our love and prayers to Ryan’s family and friends during this difficult time.”

Keeler was selected to the Academic All-Mountain West team after compiling a 3.80 grade-point average as a pre-business student.

On the football field, he appeared in seven games for the Rebels, making eight tackles, including a sack against Air Force on Oct. 15.

“Ryan was definitely preparing for a big year this year, but more important than that he was honestly a great person,” Ajiake said, per FOX5’s Paloma Villicana. “Never complained, had a great attitude, showed up and worked every day. He was the kind of teammate you wanted around you … I am broken for his family and offer them my condolences and prayers.”
