Contract
Chelsea terminate midfielder Ross Barkley’s contract by mutual consent as former England international becomes free agent.
Barkley’s contract, which he signed in 2018, was due to expire next summer. However, the west London club have now confirmed the midfielder will now be leaving the Bridge with immediate effect.
“We would like to thank Ross for his contribution to Chelsea and wish him well for the rest of his career.”
It’s understood the Blues were hoping to send their midfielder they signed from Everton for £15million out on loan this season.
However, after a below par spell out at Aston Villa, and making just six Premier League appearances last season, Barkley couldn’t secure a move – leading Chelsea to move to get him off the wage bill.
Nice
Ross Barkley has signed for French club Nice.
The 28-year old former England international was a free agent after Chelsea paid up his contract last week, with Barkley understood to have received around £7m.
Barkley, who had also held talks with Southampton, was presented to Nice fans on Sunday night prior to their game against Monaco.
Nice have signed Aaron Ramsey this summer plus Kasper Schmeichel and Fulham full back Joe Bryan. Nicolas Pepe also joined on loan from Arsenal.
Barkley has been given the No 11 shirt at Nice, who went into the game against Monaco in 14th place in Ligue 1.
