Tiger Woods and reigning FedExCup champ Rory McIlroy took on Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas in a best-ball competition Saturday from southwest Florida. Spieth and Thomas continued their success as a team, winning 3 and 2. They never trailed, but the camaraderie entertained throughout.
The Match wasn’t close but the trash talk and antics kept things entertaining. So did the players’ explanations about how they executed a variety of shots, such as Thomas talking about how he tried to “draw” a bunker shot so his ball would roll more. It’s a tip he took from Tiger.
The best explanation came from Spieth on his match-winning approach shot from the pine straw, which he hit 5 feet from a pin tucked close to water. He holed the putt to give his team the victory.
“I was just trying to get on top of it and play a cut. If you end up hitting pine straw first, it could go anywhere,” Spieth said. “I just almost try to hit it a little thin in a way and thin-cut it.”
Woods used his cart’s reverse buzzer to distract Thomas, revenge for Spieth and Thomas waiting until McIlroy was over a putt to concede it to him. Thomas joked that announcer Charles Barkley was eyeing the full moon “like it’s an Oreo.”
The Thomas-Barkley banter continued as they discussed their rival alma maters. Barkley insisted on calling Thomas’ former school “Alabama University,” leading Thomas to say, “I know you went to Auburn, you may not be the brightest, but you know it’s the University of Alabama.” Then Thomas said the next iteration of The Match would be “Chuck versus a plate of cheese fries.”
Rory McIlroy majors
He is a four-time major champion, winning the 2011 U.S. Open, 2012 PGA Championship, 2014 Open Championship and 2014 PGA Championship.
Along with Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, he is one of three players to win four majors by the age of 25.
McIlroy hasn’t won a major championship in just about eight years. He emerged victorious at the PGA Championship in 2014, at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky.
McIlroy trailed by one stroke after the first round but moved into sole possession of first place after 36 holes.
He staved off fierce competition from Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler and Henrick Stenson in the final round to earn a one-stroke victory, making par on the 18th hole. He shot 16 under for the event, and it marked his second consecutive major win.
McIlroy has won the U.S. Open. In fact, it was the first major he won during his career.
McIlroy, then 22, won the U.S. Open in 2011 at Congressional Golf Club in Bethesda, Md. He ran away with the event, carding a 16 under par for the tournament and winning by eight strokes. He led the tournament from wire to wire thanks to the 6 under 65 he posted in Round 1 of the tournament.
McIlroy also set a new record for the lowest aggregate score at a U.S. Open (268); Jack Nicklaus had previously held that record at 272.
Witb
Rory McIlroy is enjoying an incredible year and returned to the top of the world rankings for the first time since July 2020 with a successful defence of his title at the CJ Cup – his 23rd PGA Tour win.
A fifth Major title eluded the 33-year-old, but he finished inside the top 10 at all four Grand Slam events, starting with a runner-up at The Masters, and followed by an 8th at the US PGA.
He was T5th at the US Open before finishing 3rd at the 150th Open after a dramatic final day which saw him pipped by Cameron Smith.
While his eight-year wait for another Major will go on, McIlroy did become the first player to win the FedEx Cup three times when he overturned a six-shot deficit in the final round of the Tour Championship.
He also lifted the Harry Vardon Trophy for the fourth time in his career after claiming top spot in the DP World Tour rankings for the 2022 season.
“It feels like a long time since I lifted that trophy,” McIlroy told Sky Sports. “It’s been seven years and it feels just as good as I can remember.”
McIlroy also became just the second player to win the FedEx Cup and Race to Dubai titles in the same season, following Henrik Stenson in 2013.
Swing
Rory McIlroy has the kind of golf swing the rest of us dream of. It’s free-flowing, powerful and powerfully smooth.
It’s not just his golf swing’s style though, it’s the substance it produces: He’s statistically the best driver of the ball since peak Tiger Woods, and one of the longest pound-for-pound hitters ever to ascend to the top of professional golf.
And now, following his win at the CJ Cup last weekend, Rory returned to the World No. 1 spot in the Official World Golf Ranking.
There are lots of different reasons why golfers hit draws, but above you can see Smith highlighting Rory’s swing to show one of the key commonalities: That players who hit a draw have their upper body tilted away from the target at impact. Paired with his hips moving towards the target, this creates the key ingredient of right side bend.
