Real Madrid wants to start the new season the same way it ended the last one — winning a trophy.
Madrid won the Champions League in its final match last season, and on Wednesday it begins the new season by taking on Europa League winner Eintracht Frankfurt in the UEFA Super Cup in Helsinki, Finland.
It will be the teams’ first competitive meeting since the 1960 European Cup final, when Madrid won its fifth straight European title at the time with a thrilling 7-3 win at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.
Madrid is chasing its fifth Super Cup title, and first since 2017, while Frankfurt will be making its first Super Cup appearance following its shootout victory over Rangers in the Europa League final. That win ended the German club’s 42-year wait for a European trophy.

UEFA Champions League winners Real Madrid and UEFA Europa League holders Eintracht Frankfurt will battle for supremacy in the 2022 edition of the UEFA Super Cup at Helsinki Olympic Stadium on Thursday.
The Super Cup is the traditional opener to the new UEFA club competition for the 2022-2023 season.
The upcoming clash between the two European champions will be their first meeting since the 1960 European Cup final.
While Eintracht Frankfurt club is making their debut at the UEFA Super Cup this season, Carlos Ancelotti’s Real Madrid have lifted the famous trophy on four occasions.
Ancelotti, who is the most successful Champions League manager in the history of the elite competition, famously guided Real Madrid to Super Cup glory back in 2014.

Real Madrid claimed the 2022-23 season’s first trophy with a comfortable 2-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the UEFA Super Cup in Helsinki, Finland early Thursday morning.
Los Blancos thus joined Barcelona and AC Milan as the most successful teams, with five wins each.
David Alava scored the opener in the 37th minute from a Casemiro set-up then Karim Benzema doubled the lead in the 65th with an assist from Vinicious Jr. Carlo Ancelotti’s side had defeated Liverpool to win the UEFA Champions League in May, while Oliver Glasner side got the the better of Frankfurt Rangers in the UEFA Europa League final.
The game was still open at 1-0, and depending on the reaction from Frankfurt – Madrid could have had a tough half ahead.
They continued to ooze confidence however, and remained on top of the play throughout the second half. The majority of the chances flashed by quickly however, as Vinícius Júnior and Casemiro came reasonably close.
Frankfurt had one half chance, but Courtois held the ball well. Madrid were rewarded for their play when Vinícius broke away and picked out Karim Benzema.
The captain struck the ball first time, but it wasn’t exactly a good effort. Nonetheless, the goalkeeper reacted very slowly to it, and it snuck in just past him for two.
Both Aurélien Tchouaméni and Antonio Rüdiger were brought on late on to make their Real Madrid debuts, but the game was effectively already won at this point.
