‘Humble and cheerful’ ex-Commonwealth Games mountain biker dies in his sleep aged just 37 – two days after becoming Scottish champion.

Rab’s impressive cycling career has seen him race on all seven continents, compete in the UCI XCO World Cup, and even represent his native Scotland in the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

A fan of many biking disciplines, Rab set the fastest known time for mountain biking across Scotland’s iconic West Highland Way – his favourite route in the UK – in 2020.

These days, he’s also kept busy by his own coaching business, Wardell Cycle Coaching, which he also launched in 2020.

Born in 1985 in Dunfermline, Scotland, Wardell started to chase mountain biking and other forms of cycling when he was 15.

First and foremost a mountain biker, he also loved all forms of riding, from road to BMX, with a Scottish Cyclocross Championship title to his name, too.

He’s traveled to race on every continent (yep, including Antarctica), and in 2020 set the Fastest Known Time on Scotland’s West Highland Way (a record that has since been broken).

He further added , I think it is important for everyone to speak about their mental health, especially young people. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health.

I think talking about your mental health when you’re young can be very difficult. I think a lot of the time when you are young you don’t really know what you are feeling, and you don’t always know how to put how you feel into words.

The 37-year-old died in his sleep on Tuesday, August 23.

He had just won the elite men’s title at the Scottish MTB XC Championships in Dumfries and Galloway at the weekend.

Mr Wardell had appeared on BBC Scotland’s The Nine programme on Monday evening.

The cyclist, who lived in Glasgow, told the BBC of how he had overcome three punctures to win the race.

Rab Wardell won the men’s title at the Scottish MTB XC Championships at the weekend.

Mr Wardell, who was the partner of Olympic gold medal-winning cyclist Katie Archibald, had been riding bikes from a young age but did not take up cycling or mountain biking as a sport until he was 15.

His win at Kirroughtree Forest near Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire, on Sunday was described as a ‘show of incredible resilience’ by British Cycling after Mr Wardell managed to catch the early race leaders to take the win. During the race he recovered from three punctures to take the gold medal.

Wardell, who lives in Glasgow, took first place within the elite males’s class within the Scottish MTB XC Championships, which had been held in Dumfries and Galloway.

The revelation has left his household in utter disbelief.
