PSG confirm Marco Verratti contract extension.
Paris Saint-Germain have announced that midfielder Marco Verratti has renewed his contract with the club for another two years, taking his time at the French capital to 2026.
The 30-year-old has been at the club for over a decade, having won a record eight Ligue 1 titles during that time. Although he has seen many a season blighted by injury, the Italian international has racked up just short of 400 appearances.
Verratti’s previous contract was expiring at the end of next season, with talks for his renewal having reportedly been at an advanced stage just before the World Cup, which he missed out on as Italy fell to defeat in the play-offs.
The news was confirmed on the night PSG return to action following the World Cup break, taking on Strasbourg in Ligue 1.
Verratti starts in the base of midfield alongside Vitinha and Fabian Ruiz, taking his appearances to 396 and giving him the chance to celebrate the new deal with a victory.
The Euro 2021-winning midfielder, who has been a regular fixture in the team this season with 14 appearances, will now be hoping to add a ninth title to his tally, as well as finally going all the way in the Champions League.
A creative, hard-working, and technically gifted playmaker, Verratti began his career with Italian club Pescara in 2008, where he soon rose to prominence as one of the best young midfielders in Europe, helping the team to win the 2011–12 Serie B title, and winning the 2012 Bravo Award.
His playing style drew comparisons with Andrea Pirlo, due to his passing ability, vision, and control, as well as his similar transition from the role of trequartista to that of a regista.
In July 2012, he transferred to French side Paris Saint-Germain, where he has won eight Ligue 1 titles, among other domestic and individual trophies, and established himself as one of the best midfielders in the world. He ranks second for all-time appearances for the club.
In Ligue 1 terms, Verratti is already the most successful player in the history of Le Championnat with his eight French titles, six Coupe de France, and nine Trophee des Champions successes.
He also lifted the now defunct Coupe de la Ligue six times between 2014-2020 and was also a UEFA Champions League runner-up in 2020 as well as a UEFA Euro 2020 champion with Italy.
