Manchester City are the two-time defending champions, having won both the 2020–21 season and 2021–22 season.

Starting from the 2022–23 season, clubs will be able to make five rather than three substitutions.

These substitutions can be made in three stoppages during game time, and additionally at half time, in line with rest of the top six European leagues (Bundesliga, Ligue 1, the Primeira Liga, La Liga and Serie A).

There will also be a mid-season break for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, with the last match on the weekend of 12–13 November 2022, and the first match after the World Cup on 26 December 2022, following the World Cup final on 18 December 2022.

Ahead of the season, players decided to not take a knee routinely before matches, and restricted the gesture for some “significant moments”.

However, captains affirmed their commitment towards fighting racism and other forms of discrimination.
