Johnathan Thurston and Paul Green’s wife Amanda led a chorus of tributes as the NRL legend was laid to rest at a moving service in Brisbane.

In 1994, Green followed his Easts’ coach John Lang to Sydney’s Cronulla-Sutherland, turning heads with the maturity and skill of his play at halfback. In his rookie season in the NSWRL, Green played 24 games.

In 1995, he backed up his solid debut season by winning the ARL’s prestigious Rothmans Medal as best and fairest player.

After missing just one match in four seasons, a serious shoulder injury restricted Green to just four matches in 1998.

Green’s public funeral service was held at Kougari Oval, home of the Wynnum-Manly Seagulls.

The former halfback and coach of the North Queensland Cowboys and Queensland Maroons died earlier this month shortly after celebrating his son’s birthday.

About 700 people attended the service, including rugby league luminaries such as Johnathan Thurston, Allan Langer, Wally Lewis, Andrew Gee, Shane Webcke, Ben Ikin and Jason Taumololo.

The pallbearers for the service were Green’s brother Rick, his friends Mark Beitz and Jamie Fitzpatrick and former teammates Gee, Craig Greenhall and Danny Grimley — with Beitz reading the eulogy.

Wife’s tribute

Amanda revealed how the pair met in 1998 in her touching tribute at the invite-only service that was livestreamed for the public to pay their respects.

“Paul and I met at the Mad Cow in Townsville, an establishment of many relationships,” Amanda quipped.

“The day Paul proposed he said to me ‘you better strap yourself in because it’s going to be one hell of a ride’, and that it was.

“We had the deepest love and he made me feel deeply loved … we’ve always been a team.

“As heartbroken as I am today, I’ve loved every moment with Paul. I loved you yesterday, I love you today and I will love you tomorrow.”

In memory of Paul Green, his family has asked that people support the work of the Australian Sports Brain Bank at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
