After the 2015–16 season, Subban was traded to the Nashville Predators, where he spent three seasons before being traded to New Jersey in 2019. He is also an analyst for the NHL on ESPN.

Retirement

P.K. Subban was hoping to keep playing hockey, but at at age 33 and after 13 years in the NHL he has decided to retire.

“I never looked at myself or ever felt I was ‘just a hockey player,’ ” Subban wrote on social media Tuesday morning to announce his retirement. “I always looked at myself as a person who happened to play hockey.

Having that perspective allowed me to enjoy every shift like it was my last, celebrate every goal with emotion, and play every game as if someone paid to watch me play who had never seen me play before.”

Subban’s last game was on April 29 with the New Jersey Devils and he finished the season with 5-17-22 totals in 77 games and was minus-8 while averaging 18:18 of ice time.

It was the final season of Subban’s eight-year, US$72-million contract that he signed in 2014 while playing for the Canadiens, who selected him in the second round (43rd overall) of the 2007 NHL Draft.

A lot has happened with P.K. Subban since he signed an eight-year, US$72-million contract with the Canadiens on Aug. 2, 2014 — a day after enduring an arbitration hearing with GM Marc Bergevin that left emotions raw.

“I can remember going through the arbitration … that seems like yesterday,” Don Meehan, the agent who negotiated that contract and still represents Subban, said during a phone interview Wednesday evening.

“I guess for somebody my age, eight years flies by pretty quickly,” the 71-year-old Meehan added. “Probably not so quickly for somebody who’s a lot younger. But at my age, the years seem to fly by.”

Since signing that contract, Subban has been traded twice — first by the Canadiens to the Nashville Predators and then by the Predators to the New Jersey Devils.
