Having gone professional and competed in various Australian races and championships in 2014, Piastri began competing in European and other CIK-FIA sanctioned karting championships with Ricky Flynn Motorsport the following year.

He moved to the United Kingdom to further his racing career in 2016, finishing sixth in the 2016 World Championship in Bahrain.

In early 2016, Piastri landed his first major sponsorship, HP Tuners (founded and owned by his father), which helped fund his racing career.

This was displayed when on his racing suit and car during the GP3 Series, F3 and F2 season.

Later in 2016, Piastri made his single-seater debut in selected rounds of the Formula 4 UAE Championship with Dragon F4, claiming two podiums to take sixth in the championship.

Driving for the Dragon Racing team, Piastri picked up two podiums in 11 races and placed sixth in the championship standings despite only contesting three of the five rounds.

That programme was a warm-up for his main focus in 2017: British F4. Piastri signed for Arden, the team run by Red Bull team principal Christian Horner’s father Gary, and fought for the title against Carlin’s Jamie Caroline.

He claimed his first win in a racing car a reversed-grid race at Oulton Park, went on to win five more times and was title runner-up with 376.5 points.

During that year he also got the opportunity to try out Formula Renault 2.0 for the first time, contesting a round of the category’s Northern European Cup.

In 2018 he moved into the category full-time, claiming three podiums in both the Eurocup and Northern European Championships.

Parents

Piastri was born in Melbourne on April 6, 2001 – yes, he is that young – to parents Chris and Nicole.

Father Chris owns a successful automotive software development company, and it was clear from the get-go that Piastri was obsessed with everything car-related.

That’s right down to his choice of bedtime stories, which were mainly car books.

The keen youngster could even recite the horsepower, speed and other stats of his favourite models.

But they say every journey begins with a single step, and in Piastri’s F1 case, it was a purchase his father made overseas.

‘We bought remote-controlled cars when I was on a business trip in America and Oscar took to that incredibly.

He started racing them and got third place in his first-ever event against 20 and 30-year-olds when he was just six,’ Chris told the Sydney Morning Herald in 2021.
