There’s no better way to ring in the New Year than on the ice.
On Monday, Jan. 2, the first-place Boston Bruins will do just that when they face off against Sidney Crosby’s Pittsburgh Penguins at Fenway Park for this year’s 2023 Winter Classic.
And while we can’t imagine any pucks will fly over the Green Monster, we can expect a tight matchup between two Eastern Conference contenders.
Led by Patrice Bergeron, Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak, the Bruins are fighting to maintain their spot atop the Eastern Conference’s Atlantic Division while the Penguins attempt to rise the ranks of the crowded Metropolitan Division.
Winter classic 2023 schedule
The game will take place on January 2, 2023, at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, with the Boston Bruins hosting the Pittsburgh Penguins.
On February 4, 2022, the NHL announced that the 2023 NHL Winter Classic would take place at Fenway Park, hosted by the Boston Bruins.
Fenway Park will become the first venue to host two Winter Classics, having previously hosted the 2010 NHL Winter Classic.
ESPN reported in February 2022 that the Pittsburgh Penguins would likely be the opponent after Fenway Sports Group, owner of Fenway Park, took over majority control of the Penguins in December 2021. The league confirmed that it would be the Penguins on April 13.
Because New Year’s Day in 2023 lands on a Sunday, the game was moved to Monday, January 2, along with the New Year’s Day College football bowl games.
In addition, it will return to an afternoon start time (2 p.m. EST) in order to avoid competing with Monday Night Football.
