Neil Brooks is an Australian former sprint freestyle swimmer best known for winning the 4 × 100 m medley relay at the 1980 Olympics in Moscow as part of the Quietly Confident Quartet.

Brooks was as much known for his swimming achievements as he was for disciplinary incidents. He often found himself in conflict with officialdom and threatened with sanctions.

His international career ended when he was suspended for drinking 46 cans of beer on the return flight to Australia after the 1986 Commonwealth Games.

In retirement, he became a news presenter and sports commentator, but was fired amid alcohol problems.

Bikies allegedly bashed Olympic gold medallist Neil Brooks after a failed $2 million business deal, saying “you’re a dead man”, a court has heard.

The former swimming champion’s nose was broken after being jumped in a Gold Coast car park in 2010 by two men hired by ex-business partner Glenn Melcheck, Brooks’ barrister Christopher Wilson said.

Brooks, 60, and his wife Linda on Wednesday appeared in a Brisbane Magistrates Court committal hearing, five years after being charged with fraud.

It is alleged they made dishonest representations to induce Mr Melcheck and his wife to pay $2 million and buy 50 per cent of the Brooks’ sports merchandise company before it failed months later in 2008.

But At the hearing Mr Wilson said Brooks was punched in the face and knocked to the ground by two hired bikies as he got out of his car in September 2010.

Mr Melcheck was accused of standing nearby smiling as the men he claimed were debt collectors demanded Brooks sign papers in a bid to access more than $70,000.

Also “When he (Brooks) was getting up one of the men said ‘you’re a dead man, he’s got a gun and I’ve got a knife, try and run and I will cut your f***ing throat’,” Mr Wilson said.

Neil and Linda Brooks are each charged with one count of fraud by dishonestly inducing delivery of property to the value of, or over, $5,000.

Mr Brooks anchored the Australian medley relay which won gold at the 1980 Moscow Olympics and was a member of the famous “Mean Machine” quartet at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, also winning gold. 

It is alleged in 2008 Mr and Ms Brooks made dishonest representations about the success of their sports merchandise business, in order to induce two investors to purchase a 50 per cent stake in the company.

During a committal hearing on Wednesday, the Brisbane Magistrates Court heard Glen and Carole Melcheck agreed to pay $2 million.

Because this was made up of a $1.65 million purchase price, with an agreement between the parties the remainder would go toward working capital for the business.

The court heard the pair had signed an agreement with the Brooks in late January of 2008 in good faith, and paid a $50,000 deposit in the days after, before later agreeing to the full settlement.

An only child, Brooks was born in Crewe, born 27 July 1962, England, before migrating to Western Australia when he was four, along with his working-class parents Mick and Norah.

The wife of an Olympic swimmer who won gold with his Mean Machine relay team, has been arrested over a $2 million fraud scheme after returning to Australia from Bali.

Linda Brooks was arrested late last week when she flew into Perth from Bali, where she and her husband Neil, who won gold at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, were believed to be living.

Also Ms Brooks faced a Perth court on fraud charges on Monday, with police alleging her victim lost $1.95 million in the scheme. 

But Detective Inspector Melissa Anderson said Linda Brooks faced fraud charges in relation to a business venture, A Current Affair reported. 

‘Police will be alleging that she was a director of a sports manufacturing company that made false representations in relation to that financial venture, inducing a person to purchase a 50 percent share of the company,’ she said.

Ms Brooks was granted bail when she appeared in a Perth court on Monday.

Also she was ordered to reappear in a Queensland court on November 13.
