Upon making his official professional MMA debut, Diaz competed mainly for World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC).

In 2006, at WEC 24, he fought for the WEC Lightweight Championship against then-champion Hermes França, losing by submission in the second round.

This was the last event held by WEC before it was acquired by Zuffa, LLC, then parent company of the UFC.

Nate Diaz next fight

Nate Diaz says he never asked to fight Khamzat Chimaev and insists he has no interest in facing the Swedish welterweight in the main event of UFC 279

Diaz will go head-to-head with Chimaev on September 10 in Las Vegas before he retires from the production for good following the expiration of his contract.

Diaz – who is nine years older than Chimaev – insists the pressure is on the undefeated star and insists he is doing UFC a favour by taking the fight.

Many fans believe the UFC have deliberately matched Diaz with undefeated Chimaev as a result of his ongoing dispute with Dana White.

The 37-year-old fighter called out White for ‘holding him hostage’ after announcing his desire to retire from the production.

Diaz said White was refusing to arrange the final fight of his deal to prevent him from leaving UFC.

The UFC’s ranking system has been used for a number of years now to decide which fighters are in contention for a UFC title, and which fighters are sliding down the ladder after a loss.

The UFC rankings are undoubtedly an important tool, but for the fans, they’re not as much of a big deal when it comes to deciding fighter popularity.

Nick Diaz is not just one of the most popular fighters in the UFC right now, it’s arguable that the Stockton native is one of the most popular fighters in UFC history, period.

Diaz’s UFC record isn’t actually all that impressive. Across two stints with the promotion, he’s gone 7-6-1, although it must be noted that he’s also fought some of the greatest fighters of all time – names like Georges St-Pierre and BJ Penn.

But despite an abrasive, devil-may-care personality, UFC fans simply adore Diaz. His name never seems too far from the news, and whenever he’s linked with a fight in the octagon, the entire internet seems to light up with excitement.

Despite preparing for a fight with former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler at UFC 266, Diaz remains unranked by the promotion right now.
