“2023 will be a year full of lessons for me, and I hope I’ll see you guys at the start of the next one cause I will be back at the Australian Open 2024. Love you all infinitely,” she added.

Osaka had not explained her absence until Wednesday, when she posted what she called “a little life update for 2023.”

Osaka’s last tournament appearance was at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo in September, where the home favourite withdrew before her second-round match, complaining of abdominal pain.

The top ranked player in the world in 2019, the Japanese star — who grew up in the United States — is now ranked 47th in the world.

Osaka has won four Grand Slam singles titles with triumphs in the Australian Open in 2019 and 2021 and the US Open in 2018 and 2020.

She had been open about her struggles with mental health and depression in the past and took a break from the sport after the French Open in 2021 before returning to compete at the Tokyo Olympics later that year.

The tennis pro shared the news on Instagram with a carousel of images, including one snap of an ultrasound screen. “Can’t wait to get back on the court but here’s a little life update for 2023,” she captioned the shot.

Osaka is one of the most prominent names in sports, but the mental health advocate has been open that she relies on a community of support to perform at the highest level — particularly that of her boyfriend.

Cordae and Osaka attended an L.A. Clippers game for their first date in 2019, though the two opted to keep quiet about their relationship for the first year they were dating. In a video for GQ, Cordae later revealed their first kiss was in Indian Wells, California.

Cordae is a Grammy-nominated rapper who has collaborated with H.E.R. and Young Thug. Upon the release of his sophomore album Bird’s Eye View, Osaka praised him on Instagram, saying, “Getting closer to someone and seeing how much love and dedication they put into their craft is truly inspiring.”

The four-time major winner’s withdrawal led to speculation that she might be set to pull the pin on her tennis career, but the 25-year-old insisted she was looking forward to returning after she becomes a mum.

Osaka revealed her pregnancy news after posting a message alongside photo of what appeared to be a pregnancy scan on her social media accounts.

“Can’t wait to get back on the court but here’s a little life update for 2023,” she wrote. “I know that I have so much to look forward to in the future, one thing I’m looking forward to is for my kid to watch one of my matches and tell someone, ‘that’s my mom’, haha.'”

The news comes five days after another former world No.1, retired Australian great and reigning Australian Open champion Ash Barty, also announced she and her husband Garry Kissick were expecting their first child. The tennis world was quick to congratulate Osaka on her momentous news.
