Molly McCann vs Erin Blanchfield
Erin Blanchfield ended the hype around Molly McCann in emphatic fashion at UFC 281.
Despite competing in her own backyard, Blanchfield actually found herself being booed on Saturday thanks to the overwhelming popularity that McCann has built in her last couple of fights.
None of that mattered once the action got started with Blanchfield snatching an early takedown, nearly finishing with elbows on the ground and eventually locking on a nasty kimura that forced McCann to tap out.
The end came at just 3:37 in the opening round.
“It felt really good and I think it was worth $50K,” Blanchfield said after the win. “I was definitely surprised they didn’t stop it. She was still moving. But I think it could have been stopped even earlier.
“Andrea Lee doesn’t have any fights, she’s [ranked] No. 9, I’d love to take that spot.”
A couple of striking exchanges led to Blanchfield dropping down and planting McCann on the canvas with a perfectly-timed takedown early in the fight. Blanchfield wasted no time advancing into side control where she began raining down elbows from the crucifix position.
McCann was trapped with Blanchfield just hammering away with short punches and elbows from the top with the Liverpudian just eating shots.
Molly McCann fight time
Erin Blanchfield put the women’s flyweight division on notice earlier tonight (Sat., Nov. 12, 2022) at UFC 281 live on ESPN+ from inside Madison Square Garden in New York City, when the rising youngster stopped a red-hot Molly McCann with a nasty first-round submission (kimura).
Blanchfield was dominant from the opening second of this fight. After a few exchanges with McCann the 23-year-old Blanchfield scored an easy takedown and went to work.
She landed heavy ground-and-pound, locked McCann in a crucifix, and worked hard for a kimura finish. Blanchfield had to transition to lock up the stoppage but she eventually made “Meatball” tap.
Blanchfield, who turned pro back in 2018, is already 4-0 as a member of the UFC roster. She has quickly worked her way through the competition and just turned McCann into a meatball on the biggest stage yet.
Also Blanchfield should get a shot at the women’s flyweight top 10 her next time out and could line herself up for title contention with a strong 2023.
Apparently nobody told Erin Blanchfield that Molly McCann was a highly hyped prospect, because she made short work of the Englishwoman, getting an early takedown and moving quickly to a mounted crucifix.
From here, she was able to score an ungodly amount of unanswered ground and pound before securing a kimura at 3:37 of the very first round.
After such a one-sided performance against McCann, who had been the focus of a ton of promotional material recently, fans were extremely impressed with the showing from Blanchfield. They took to social media after the fact to shower her in praises.
“Erin Blanchfield just cannibalized alllllll that momentum Molly McCann built over this year. That was jaw dropping. She’s picking up some new fans tonight,” Brett Okamoto wrote on Twitter.
“Erin Blanchfield dominates Molly McCann from start to finish. Takedown, bludgeons her with elbows and finishes with a nasty kimura. Blanchfield is a monster,” Damon Martin wrote.
“Nahhh son! Blanchfield is an absolute PROBLEM!! If yall didn’t know about her before, I’m sure y’all do now!” wrote bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling.
