Dropped
Lions veteran Mitch Robinson seems set for an extended run in the reserves, with Brisbane coach Chris Fagan admitting the wingman has been “battling” for form and fitness.
A calf problem forced Robinson out of last weekend’s QClash, and when he wasn’t included in Brisbane’s squad for Sunday’s blockbuster against the Swans at the SCG, it was assumed it was because he was still injured.
However, Fagan on Friday said Robinson – who turns 33 in June – was available for AFL selection, but the decision was made to bring him back via the club’s VFL side, probably for more than just a week.
“To be fair to Mitch he’s probably been battling with bits and pieces for a little while now,” Fagan said.
“Hopefully he can just get back in the reserves, play a good stretch of footy, get his form back and his fitness fully back and challenge for a spot in the seniors.
“We just want to make sure that when he comes back into the seniors that he’s not having those niggles … because he’s been battling for a while.”
Fagan added that the Lions’ impressive display in last Sunday’s 52-point thrashing of the Gold Coast made it tough to recall Robinson despite the selection vacancy left by injured rookie Kai Lohmann, who is out for six weeks with a damaged ankle.
Mitch Robinson stats
Robinson played sporadically in the AFL in his first two seasons, playing 26 of 46 possible games for Carlton and spending the rest of the time with VFL-affiliate Northern Bullants.

His breakthrough came in the 2011 season, when he won a regular place in the team, and became a key ball-winner in the midfield; at midseason, Herald Sun commentator Mark Robinson heralded him as the league’s most improved player.
He went on to finish seventh in the John Nicholls Medal count for the season, and was selected to represent Australia in the 2011 International Rules Series.
Robinson quickly became popular with Carlton fans for his hardness at the ball – often in apparent disregard for his own safety, due to his shark-like tendencies to the point where his style is sometimes described as “kamikaze”.
Robinson was involved in some off-field incidents during his time at Carlton. He was involved in a fight at the 2013 Big Day Out festival, and was fined $1,000 by the club as a result.

Mitch Robinson Tattoos
Certainly Robinson is renowned for his kamikaze attack on the football, and is easily identified by the tattoos which he had long before they became a craze in the AFL, and to him are a meaningful and important representation of key people in his life.
And Fortnite is appropriate given that it is the online video game via which last December he became the first active AFL player signed by an eSports franchise.
But the StatsFile team thinks you can do better. Like “value for money”. Or ‘worth the risk”. Or ‘bloody good move’.
Because Robinson, the toast of the Lions after he won the Marcus Ashcroft Medal in Saturday’s Clash #17 win at Metricon Stadium, has proved himself that and more.
