Klim was first selected to represent Australia in the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, while still a student at Wesley College, Melbourne.
For his achievements he was named the Male Swimmer of the Year by Swimming World Magazine in 1997.
In 1999, he set a world record in the 100 m butterfly twice, in a FINA-sanctioned time trial (51.81 s).
It was broken at the 2003 World Championships in Barcelona by the Ukrainian Andriy Serdinov in the first semifinal of the 100 m butterfly, and then broken another time in the next semifinal by Michael Phelps. Phelps’s record was bested by Ian Crocker in the final the following day.

Australian swimming superstar Michael Klim has shared a glimpse into his daily struggle as he learns to live with rare neurological disorder.
Mr Klim was diagnosed with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy in 2020.
The auto-immune disease causes the body to attack the nerve covering, or myelin, which insulates and protects the nerves. CIDP leads to increasing sensory loss and weakness associated with loss of reflexes.
The triple Olympian revealed he had been diagnosed with the incurable disease in July 2022 after his health began to rapidly decline
“In 2019 I had an ankle fusion operation in Sydney and began IVIG treatment (intravenous Immunoglobulin) to reduce the effect of the inflammatory condition that attacks the immune system,” Mr Klim wrote on his blog in July.
“My health began to deteriorate drastically. I was experiencing issues with my (degenerative) back and CIDP combined.
“I started to fall over, I couldn’t walk up the stairs, I needed to rely on my partner Michelle and the kids to lean on, and I found myself laying down in bed all day because the back pain became unbearable.”
The disease can impact people differently, but Mr Klim said it’s his legs and feet that seem to be the main source of pain.

Michael Klim marked his first anniversary with girlfriend Michelle Owen on Monday.
The 42-year-old former Olympic swimmer shared a black and white photo of himself cosying up to his Australian DJ girlfriend.
He captioned the photo: ‘You can’t explain it, you can’t predict it, it just happens!
‘Bloody grateful you came into my life and very excited for what the future holds.

Michael and Michelle debuted their romance back in October, five months after his split from Desiree Deravi, when they were spotted together at a cafe in Bondi, as reported by Woman’s Day at the time.
The former Olympian began dating Desiree in 2016, but reportedly split in May 2019 after they unfollowed each on Instagram.
Also Michelle and Michael have spent plenty of time together in Bali over the past several months to be closer to his three children, who live there with his ex-wife, Lindy Klim.
