After committing to Penn State, Parsons was informed by head coach James Franklin that he would start his Penn State career at middle linebacker rather than defensive end, which he played in high school.

Franklin also announced that Parsons would be in contention for the starting job even though he was a true freshman.

In his freshman year, Parsons only started one out of 13 games for the Nittany Lions, but managed to lead the team in tackles with 82, while also making 4 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, 10 quarterback hurries and 2 forced fumbles.

The NFL’s Next Gen Stats also clocked Hill running at 23.24 mph during a 2016 game, the top speed in the entire database dating back to that season.

Give credit to Parsons for showing off his incredible athleticism and winning the race, but let’s acknowledge the results may have looked a little bit different with a motivated Hill sprinting down the field.

Position

Parsons to be ranked as one of the best off-ball linebackers after his first season in the NFL while playing multiple positions says a lot about him. And yet, Parsons has even higher expectations for himself.

Dallas knows they have the ability to confuse other offenses by allowing Parsons to line up all over the field. It seems as though he will be ready and willing to take snaps from any given position.

There is still a gap left by Gregory’s absence, but the addition of Dante Fowler Jr. and the potential of added defensive line draft picks should hopefully help.

Parsons’ adaptability is a huge help for the Cowboys. While he will remain a linebacker on the roster, teams have to be prepared to see him move back and forth between positions to mix things up.
