Biggest comeback in NFL history

Matt Ryan went down in NFL history Saturday for an unfortunate reason as the quarterback blew yet another massive lead.

The Colts led the Vikings 33–0 at halftime and 36–7 with 4:53 remaining in the third quarter before the squad froze.

Minnesota came marching back with the largest comeback in NFL history after scoring 33 points in a game that went into overtime.

But this wasn’t the first time Ryan was at the helm of a team who lost in an iconic comeback.

When fans think of these moments, Super Bowl LI between the Patriots and Falcons likely comes to mind. Ryan and Atlanta held a 25-point lead with 18 minutes to go on football’s biggest stage, but New England powered back with 31 unanswered points in Houston that day. That overtime game marked the largest comeback in Super Bowl history.

Officially, Ryan has been the losing quarterback in the first and sixth largest comebacks in NFL history, according to Scott Barrett of Fantasy Points.

But that will offer little consolation for Ryan, who has another forgettable result to be reminded of until the end of time.

For Ryan, the loss to the Vikings had to feel like some unwelcome deja vu. However, while Ryan’s numbers won’t explode off the stat sheet, he finished 19-of-33 for 182 yards and a touchdown and didn’t turn the ball over against the Vikings.

So, Ryan did his part, but unfortunately for Indy, they couldn’t say the same for the team’s defense. The Vikings victimized the Colts through the air and on the ground, finishing with 518 total yards of offense.

The Indianapolis Colts somehow managed to blow a 33-0 halftime lead as Kirk Cousins and the Minnesota Vikings outscored the home team 36-3 in the second half to force overtime. The Colts had a chance to win the game in overtime, but failed to capitalize.

The Vikings drove the ball down the field in the final 90 seconds of the game before kicking the game-winning field goal to complete an unbelievable comeback and win 39-36.

Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons played the role of victims in the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history. Tom Brady and the New England Patriots blew a 28-3 lead in Super Bowl 51, losing 34-28 in overtime.

According to ESPN’s win predictor, the Falcons had a 99.7% chance of winning Super Bowl 51 late in the third quarter, only to blow their lead in unprecedented fashion.

Following their loss to Brady and the Patriots in the Super Bowl, Ryan and the Falcons blew multiple double-digit leads, furthering the quarterback and the team’s reputation as chokers. Together, they blew six double-digit leads in four seasons.

The problem was most persistent during the 2020 NFL campaign. They blew three leads of 15 or more points and finished the season with a 4-12 record.

They lost after leading by 20 against the Dallas Cowboys, and then blew a 16-point lead against the Chicago Bears before suffering a defeat against Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who trailed by 17 points.
