Nunes started his career with Ericeirense, before moving to LigaPro side Estoril. During his time with the club, Nunes played mostly in the reserve team, before moving to Primeira Liga side Sporting CP in January 2019.
In 2020–21, Nunes helped Sporting win a double of the Primeira Liga and Taça da Liga.
Born and raised in Brazil until 12 years old, Nunes opted to play for the Portugal national team, and made his senior international debut in 2021.
Matheus Nunes is set to move to the Premier League – but it won’t be with Liverpool.
Sporting Lisbon midfielder Nunes has been frequently credited as a target for the Reds. The 23-year-old has also apparently attracted interest from Manchester City and West Ham.
However, according to a new report in The Guardian , Liverpool won’t be buying Nunes after Wolves agreed a deal with the Portuguese club.
It has been claimed that Wolves will pay the buyout clause in Nunes’ contract, which will make him their club-record signing.
It has been reported that Wolves will pay £38million for the signing of Nunes. Should a deal be completed, it will see Nunes join Goncalo Guedes as a new addition for the West Midlands club.
Matheus Nunes transfer
One player that the Reds have been linked with for large swaths of the summer window is Sporting star Matheus Nunes.
There were reports in Portugal that Liverpool could potentially make a move for the midfielder following the injury sustained by Thiago.
However, fresh suggestions indicate that Nunes will not be moving to Anfield after all.
According to A Bola via Sport Witness, the Reds approached Sporting to get a better idea of the midfielder’s situation at the club but have since decided not to lodge a formal offer.
A number of Premier League rivals have already been linked with a move for Nunes this summer including Manchester City, Chelsea and West Ham United.
Liverpool have been heavily linked with Matheus Nunes lately but the most recent updates coming from Portugal would not delight the supporters.
As per A Bola (via Sport Witness), Liverpool made contact to advance for the Portuguese midfielder and have now made a decision.
The Portuguese news source claim that even before Thiago Alcantara suffered an injury against Fulham, the Reds probed the conditions to make an offer for the Seleccao star.
However, the Anfield club have chosen “not to formalize any offer” to sign the 23-year-old midfielder, who has started the season in brilliant fashion for the Lions.
A Bola have not mentioned why Liverpool have opted to back off from the deal.
Perhaps, Jurgen Klopp is ready to count on the likes of Elliott and Keita in the center of the park or maybe, the owners do not want to meet the asking price of 50 million euros (£42.2million) slapped on Nunes.
Nunes is usually deployed in double pivot in 3–4–3 formation, operating as a number 8 looking to get forward and contribute to the attack and also has a good passing range, as he can make different types of passes whether he is looking to switch the play or try and break lines with penetrative passes or passes that split the opposition backline, which he is highly effective.
He also has the ability to carry the ball and make progressive runs, using a combination of speed and strength to make these runs, while also displaying good technique on the ball.
Nunes also posses a good anticipation and reading of the game, which allows him to make effective interceptions and challenges.
