On Monday night, Smart’s presence helped his alma mater, but he wasn’t on the court. Just close enough to get inside the head of Oklahoma State’s opponent.

With the Celtics in Oklahoma ahead of Tuesday night’s game against the Thunder, Smart checked out Oklahoma State’s matchup  against West Virginia to cheer on his Cowboys on Monday night.

Marcus Smart Ejected

Smart, who finished the night as a minus-26, was ejected from the matchup after receiving his second technical foul of the night.

The 28-year-old was called for the second tech for jawing at officials for what he believed to be a foul that went uncalled. You can watch the ejection below.

Smart had to be escorted off the court by wing Sam Hauser and interim coach Joe Mazzulla, as he was incensed with the call for a tech.

The Celtics played their worst game in franchise history through three quarters, allowing the Thunder to score 122 points over the first 36 minutes. That clearly wasn’t acceptable for the former Defensive Player of the Year, who seemingly couldn’t stand seeing more.

A visibly frustrated Smart made his way off the floor to be substituted, jawing with the officials on his way,  with head coach Jo Mazzulla holding him back after the second technical was assessed.

Smart exited the game with seven points, eight assists, and four rebounds, finishing with a +/- of -26 in his 26 minutes on court as the Thunder ran away with a 150-117 win.

The 150 points is a franchise record for the Thunder and the second-most points allowed by the Celtics in a game.

It’s the third time the Celtics have given up 150 points in franchise history and the first time since 1979.

Why has been ejected

Smart, who had received a technical foul earlier in the game, received a second after jawing with the officials, believing he was fouled as he attacked the basket.

Ultimately, one of the officials heard enough and whistled Smart for his second technical of the night which drew a sharp reaction from the veteran guard.

Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla and others had to hold Smart back as he tried to charge down the court and express his displeasure with the technical.

Cooler heads prevailed and Smart headed back to the Boston locker room without incident as Sam Hauser subbed into the game in his place.

The ejection capped a disappointing homecoming for the Oklahoma State product who finished with seven points and eight assists and was an ugly minus-26 over his 25 minutes.
