He played college football at Alabama, where he set the NCAA season records for passer rating and completion percentage as a junior en route to winning the 2021 College Football Playoff National Championship.
Selected by the Patriots in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Jones led the team to a playoff berth during his rookie season and earned Pro Bowl honors.
After originally committing to the University of Kentucky, Jones accepted a scholarship offer from the University of Alabama to play for the Crimson Tide.
Jones arrived as an early enrollee, but was redshirted his freshman season in 2017.
Ankle
The New England Patriots could be without their starting quarterback in the coming weeks.
Mac Jones is believed to have suffered a high ankle sprain in Sunday’s 37-26 loss to the Ravens and is likely to miss some time, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported.
Jones will have an MRI on Monday and Rapoport added that if the MRI confirms the sprain, a trip to injured reserve is potentially in play.
The injury occurred on an interception during the Patriots’ final offensive play of the game, after which Jones hopped to the sideline, unable to put weight on the injured leg.
He was then seen in considerable pain being helped down the stairs to the locker room.
There is an update from outside the organization, however. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that X-rays of Jones’ left ankle were negative.
Jones looked to be in serious pain as he hopped off the field and then got carried to the locker room by other members of the team.
He will continue to be evaluated, although history says the Patriots won’t share much information until they’re required to submit an injury report on Wednesday.
Jones was 22-of-32 for 321 yards and three interceptions on Sunday. The third of them came on the same play that led to his ankle injury.
Mac Jones injury
Mac Jones and the New England Patriots had a night to forget as they lost 26 – 37 to the Baltimore Ravens at home.
It was an ordeal for Mac Jones as he completed 22 of 32 passes for 321 yards but threw three interceptions.
His night only got worse as, with a couple of minutes left to play, he suffered a leg injury.
Further tests are required to understand the exact nature of the injury, but there appear to be fears that it could be tendon or ligament damage. That did not show up on the preliminary X-Ray done today, but more details are expected after further medical testing on Monday.
Mac Jones could be seen in terrible discomfort after the game, and pictures appeared to show him leaning on his teammates as he was carried to the locker room. The picture also appeared to show him crying out in pain.
He injured himself in the process of throwing to Marcus Peters. It was a pass which, to compound his misery, was picked off. One could see him trying to avoid putting any weight on the injured leg as he made it to the sidelines.
Mac Jones stats
One of the top quarterback prospects of the 2021 NFL Draft, Jones was projected to be taken in the first round.
Although many analysts predicted he would be selected third overall by the San Francisco 49ers, Jones was selected 15th overall by the New England Patriots after the 49ers drafted North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance.

Following the preseason, Jones was named the Patriots’ starter for 2021. Jones beat out incumbent starting quarterback Cam Newton, who was released during the final roster cuts.
He became New England’s first rookie quarterback to start a season opener since Bledsoe in 1993.
In his NFL debut, Jones completed 29 of 39 passes for 281 yards and made his first touchdown pass to wide receiver Nelson Agholor in a 17–16 loss against the Miami Dolphins. He also set the NFL completion percentage record for a debuting rookie at 74.4.
Jones struggled during the 2022 season opener against the Miami Dolphins, throwing an interception and losing a fumble that was returned for a touchdown in the 20–7 loss. He was later revealed suffered a back injury, but returned the following week in a 17–14 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Jersey
Mac Jones is graduating from the rookie club of jersey numbers.
After spending the entirety of his preseason rookie experience to this point wearing No. 50 — a digit typically reserved for those protecting him and opponents pursuing him — the first-round pick has officially been awarded the same number he wore at Alabama.
The last New England quarterback to wear No. 10 was Jimmy Garoppolo, who was eventually shipped to San Francisco. Jones will hope to have a better fate than Garoppolo, who showed promise in New England but wasn’t around long enough to replace Tom Brady before he was sent west to the 49ers, whom he led to a Super Bowl appearance in the 2019 season.
Jones is currently seated behind veteran starter Cam Newton, who figures to be New England’s No. 1 quarterback while the rookie still learns the ropes.
Before long, though, Jones will be expected to take the reins of the Patriots’ offense. He’ll be wearing a familiar number when that time comes.
Net worth
Jones has a net worth of $10 million. The majority of his net worth comes from his earnings and sponsorships.
