News
Melbourne CEO Gary Pert has suggested they won’t increase their offer to young ruckman Luke Jackson in a bid to stave off a reported big money deal from the Dockers.
Jackson, the West Australian kid who became the highest selected ruckman since Nic Naitanui when snapped up by the Demons with pick three in 2019, looms as the big mover this trade period.
Despite warnings of the “big gamble” on Jackson’s potential, it’s believed Fremantle have offered the young premiership player a long-term deal that could fetch up to $900,000 per season.
“(Melbourne) are about to lose their young emerging ruckman,” journalist Jon Ralph said on Fox Footy.
“Luke Jackson’s trade request is likely to come mid-week – a deal that could run to seven years on as much as $900,000 a season.”
Both Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin and Dees CEO Gary Pert said they didn’t yet know where Jackson’s future was.
Luke Jackson Trade
Melbourne premiership big man Luke Jackson has requested a trade back to Western Australia.
Jackson has been considered likely to leave the Demons throughout the year after delaying contract talks at Melbourne and then putting off a decision until the end of the year.
He made that official on Tuesday following the Demons’ shock exit from this year’s finals race with their defeat to Brisbane in Friday night’s semi-final.
“There is no doubt that we wanted Luke to remain at the Demons, but we respect his decision to want to return home to Western Australia to be closer to his family and friends,” Melbourne list manager Tim Lamb said.
“We will now work to secure a deal that compensates the club accordingly.”
Jackson has been strongly linked to Fremantle throughout the year, although has not nominated a preferred club, leaving West Coast in the mix to snare him.
The Dees had been desperate to keep the exciting 21-year-old, who was pick No.3 in the 2019 NAB AFL Draft, after playing a central role in Melbourne’s drought-breaking premiership last year.
Luke Jackson stats
Jackson represented Western Australia at the AFL Under 18 Championships for two seasons, where he ended up winning under-18 All Australian selection.
