The transfer was officially completed on 27 July, when Martínez signed a five-year contract with the club.
His transfer fee was reported to be in the range of £47 million to £49 million, plus £8.5 million in add-ons.
On 7 August, Martinez made his club debut in 2–1 home loss against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League.
Height
Lisandro Martinez’s height is the focus of attention but is that really going to stop him becoming a Premier League success? Manchester United’s struggles against Brighton and Brentford are a bad sign but it is too soon to judge the defender, argues Adam Bate.
Martinez, or the 5’9″ Lisandro Martinez as he appears doomed to be known, despite being measured at 5’10” in his own medical, had an aerial success rate of 71 per cent in Eredivisie last season, not just impressive but the best of any player in that competition.
It is not a statistic to end the debate but is worthy of mention. His combative approach to the game has long been seen as an asset.
Height in feet
After finalising his Manchester United move, some fans pointed to Martinez’s lack of height compared to other top Premier League centre-backs.
- FULL NAME – Lisandro Martínez
- BORN – January 18, 1998
- HEIGHT – 1.75 m (5 ft 9 in)
- NATIONALITY – Argentina
- ROLE – Centre-back
Martinez stands at 1.75 metres tall (under 5ft 9in). Therefore, that makes him the smallest senior centre-back in the Premier League, according to Transfermarkt.
However, any concerns over his aerial ability will likely be quickly alleviated. That is because, in last season’s Champions League, the centre-back won a higher percentage of aerial duels per game than Harry Maguire and Ruben Dias.
