Fernandez has taken a cautious approach to the 2022 season, focusing mostly on high-profile competitions.

The current World No. 14 entered New York with a record of 17-10, the highlights of which included a title run in Monterrey and a quarterfinal finish at the French Open.

Leylah Fernandez and Liudmila Samsonova are scheduled to face one another in a second round match of the US Open 2022 on Wednesday, August 31. The 2022 US Open is all set to begin from August 29 till September 11.

Samsonova

Samsonova played some of the best tennis of her career in the 6-3 7-6(3) victory, relying on her powerful serve to disrupt the Canadian’s rhythm.

The World No.35 was coming off a championship run in Cleveland last week, and kept her momentum going as she powered past Fernandez.

Employing her huge serve as her primary weapon, Samsonova hit 10 aces to zero double faults.

Furthermore, the 23-year old never faced a break point, winning an astounding 81% of points behind her first serve and finishing at the net 8 out of 10 times.

Despite the crowd cheering on last year’s finalist, Fernandez was unable to overcome her in-form opponent. The 14th seed had missed time since the French open due to a foot fracture, and looked slightly rusty as she was made to scramble by her opponent. Samsonova sealed her victory after an hour and 45 minutes, increasing her winning streak to seven straight matches.

The news comes even after a disappointing Australian Open that saw her fall in the first round, and an Adelaide International that saw her eliminated in the second round.

Fernandez has been steadily climbing in the ranking in the past year, with her first tournament win in 2021, as well as a run to the US Open Final.

The WTA ranking doesn’t feature many Latin American players, with only Colombia’s Camila Osorio, ranked 49 and Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia cracking the Top 100.

Fernandez hasn’t announced where she will be playing next.

Hope you find this information useful.
