This led to a Formula One drive with McLaren from 2007 to 2012, making him the first black driver to race in the series.

In his inaugural season, Hamilton set numerous records as he finished runner-up to Kimi Räikkönen by one point.

The following season, he won his maiden title in dramatic fashion—making a crucial overtake on the last lap of the last race of the season—to become the then-youngest ever Formula One World Champion. After six years with McLaren, Hamilton signed with Mercedes in 2013.

Changes to the regulations for 2014 mandating the use of turbo-hybrid engines saw the start of a highly successful period for Hamilton, during which he won six further drivers’ titles.

Seven-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton will leave Mercedes for Ferrari next year on a multiyear contract, the two teams announced Thursday. The shock move means one of the sport’s greats will join its most storied team.

It’s expected a Ferrari new deal would at least match that at around 25 million pounds a season or could get to as high as current F1 champion Max Verstappen’s contract.

“Scuderia Ferrari is pleased to announce that Lewis Hamilton will be joining the team in 2025, on a multi-year contract,” Ferrari said in a statement.

Mercedes said Hamilton activated a clause in his contract to leave.

“The Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team and Lewis Hamilton will part ways at the end of the 2024 season,” Mercedes said. “Lewis has activated a release option in the contract announced last August and this season will therefore be his last driving for the Silver Arrows.”

The move begins a thrilling new chapter in Hamilton’s career as he pursues a record-breaking eighth championship. Hamilton, 39, is poised to replace Carlos Sainz, whose contract expires this year, and race alongside Ferrari star Charles Leclerc, who signed a multiyear contract extension with the Italian team last week.

“I have had an amazing 11 years with this team and I’m so proud of what we have achieved together,” Hamilton said. “Mercedes has been part of my life since I was 13 years old. It’s a place where I have grown up, so making the decision to leave was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make. But the time is right for me to take this step and I’m excited to be taking on a new challenge.”

Another bombshell in the world of sport that Lewis Hamilton is leaving Mercedes at the end of the 2024 season and joining rivals Ferrari! The last few days have been quite chaotic in the sports world.

Last week Jurgen Klopp stunned one and all by announcing that he was leaving Liverpool at the end of the season. Hours later Xavi announced he was leaving Barcelona at the end of the season.

On Thursday, reports that Hamilton was heading to Ferrari started doing the rounds. At first, it appeared a hoax. Formula 1 has such a reputation. It’s a world of gossip.

But as the day progressed, some credible media organisations started lending credence to those reports and asserting it was all over bar the shouting. That Hamilton was indeed joining hands with Ferrari. Those reports turned out to be true, as they were given a seal of approval in the evening.

Hamilton became a household name at Mercedes. He became a man at Mercedes. Six out of his seven drivers’ championships have come at the Silver Arrows.

Out of his 103 wins to date which is a Formula One record, 82 have come at the United Kingdom-based team. But all good things come to an end and so has Hamilton’s time at Mercedes.

Some Mercedes fans might be sceptical over his move but Hamilton may have unleashed a masterstroke. At Mercedes, for the past few seasons, he appeared to have been stuck in a rut which wasn’t doing him and the sport any good. Hopefully, he will taste another round of great success before he bids adieu for good.

According to Forbes, Hamilton earned around US$65m ($105.97m) in 2023, including salary and endorsements and has an estimated net worth of around US$300m ($490m).

After signing the new contract with Mercedes last year, Hamilton spoke of having “unfinished business” at the team and of having faith that Mercedes could get back to the front.

Hamilton won six titles with Mercedes in seven years from 2014-20 and lost the 2021 championship to Verstappen on the final lap of the last race. He has not won a race since 2021 and remains stuck on a record 103 wins.

Five years ago, Hamilton was asked if he could ever be tempted to drive for Ferrari.

“If there is a point in my life where I decide I want a change, that potentially could be an option,” he said at the time.

In late 2019, Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport reported Hamilton met with Ferrari chairman John Elkann twice that year and they discussed Hamilton potentially replacing then-driver Sebastian Vettel at Ferrari.
