Mbappe carted home the prestigious award after emerging as the top scorer of the Qatar edition of the global football showpiece.

Mbappe became the first player to score a hat-trick in the World Cup final since 1996 but his effort went in vain. Messi scored a brace in the game that ended 3-3 after 120 minutes of intense football.

Mbappe won the Golden Boot award for being the top-scorer in the tournament while Messi won the Golden Ball for being the best player in the tournament.

Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez won the best young player award while Emi Martinez took the golden glove award for being the best goalkeeper.

Messi is the first player in FIFA WC history to win both the Golden Ball award twice having also won the prize in 2014 when Argentina lost the World cup final to Germany.

Messi narrowly missed out on the Golden Boot despite twice being in the lead in the summit clash to his club teammate Mbappe.

The French striker’s hat-trick ensured he finished the tournament with eight goals while Messi had seven.

Kylian Mbappe Hat-trick

Kylian Mbappe became only the second man in the history of the World Cup to score a hat-trick in the final. The 23-year-old’s efforts went in vain as France lost the final on penalities to Argentina.

The 23-year-old, playing in his second World Cup final, scored a hat-trick as France fought back from a 2-0 deficit against Argentina to force the match into penalties after it ended at 3-3 at the end of extra-time at the Lusail Stadium.

Kylian Mbappe became only the second man after Geoff Hurst for England v Germany in 1966 to score a hat-trick in the World Cup final.

Mbappe also broke the record for most number of goals in the World Cup finals. Apart from the hat-trick in 2022, Mbappe scored a goal in their 4-2 win over Croatia in the 2018 World Cup final in Moscow.

However, there was disappointment for Mbappe as France lost the final 4-2 on penalties. Mbappe’s 117th minute penalty went in vain as France were not able to hold their nerves in the shoot-out.

Mbappe, however, won the Golden Boot with 8 goals in Qatar 2022, taking his tally to 12 in World Cups.

France kicked off their 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign in Qatar against Australia on 22 November 2022.
