France superstar Kylian Mbappe has been crowned the winner of the 2022 World Cup Golden Boot.
Mbappe carted home the prestigious award after emerging as the top scorer of the Qatar edition of the global football showpiece.
Mbappe became the first player to score a hat-trick in the World Cup final since 1996 but his effort went in vain. Messi scored a brace in the game that ended 3-3 after 120 minutes of intense football.
Mbappe won the Golden Boot award for being the top-scorer in the tournament while Messi won the Golden Ball for being the best player in the tournament.
Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez won the best young player award while Emi Martinez took the golden glove award for being the best goalkeeper.
Messi is the first player in FIFA WC history to win both the Golden Ball award twice having also won the prize in 2014 when Argentina lost the World cup final to Germany.
Messi narrowly missed out on the Golden Boot despite twice being in the lead in the summit clash to his club teammate Mbappe.
The French striker’s hat-trick ensured he finished the tournament with eight goals while Messi had seven.
Kylian Mbappe Hat-trick
Kylian Mbappe became only the second man in the history of the World Cup to score a hat-trick in the final. The 23-year-old’s efforts went in vain as France lost the final on penalities to Argentina.
The 23-year-old, playing in his second World Cup final, scored a hat-trick as France fought back from a 2-0 deficit against Argentina to force the match into penalties after it ended at 3-3 at the end of extra-time at the Lusail Stadium.
Kylian Mbappe became only the second man after Geoff Hurst for England v Germany in 1966 to score a hat-trick in the World Cup final.
Mbappe also broke the record for most number of goals in the World Cup finals. Apart from the hat-trick in 2022, Mbappe scored a goal in their 4-2 win over Croatia in the 2018 World Cup final in Moscow.
However, there was disappointment for Mbappe as France lost the final 4-2 on penalties. Mbappe’s 117th minute penalty went in vain as France were not able to hold their nerves in the shoot-out.
Mbappe, however, won the Golden Boot with 8 goals in Qatar 2022, taking his tally to 12 in World Cups.

In the match, Mbappé was involved in three of France’s four goals in a 4–1 victory; he was in the build-up for the second goal, scored the third, a header from an Ousmane Dembélé cross, and assisted Olivier Giroud for the fourth goal.
Four days later, Mbappé scored both of France’s goals in a 2–1 victory over Denmark, securing qualification to the knockout stages and thus breaking the “World Cup Champions’ Curse”.
In the knockout round of sixteen against Poland, Mbappé scored two goals, the first into the roof of the net from 16 yards and the second a curling strike into the top corner, in a 3–1 win for France.
