The Arizona Cardinals have fired coach Kliff Kingsbury and parted ways with general manager Steve Keim after a dreadful season that saw constant unwanted headlines, a serious knee injury to star quarterback Kyler Murray and plenty of defeats.
Kingsbury joins a long list of names who couldn’t win enough games for one of the NFL’s least-successful franchises. The Cardinals haven’t won a championship since 1947 and have never had a coach last more than six seasons in more than a century of existence.
The low-key Kingsbury was owner Michael Bidwill’s surprise choice to lead the franchise back in 2019, replacing Steve Wilks. A few months later, the franchise selected Murray with the No 1 overall pick in the draft.

While the numbers aren’t exactly known, there have been reports that Kingsbury’s contract pays him around $5.5 million per year.
On March 2, 2022, Kingsbury signed a six-year extension through 2027. He was fired a year into the new contract.
Kingsbury finishes his Cardinals tenure with a 28-37-1 record (.432) and a single postseason appearance in 2021. He is let go as Arizona and owner Michael Bidwill navigate the uncertainty that comes with the health-related absence of general manager Steve Keim.
Kingsbury was under contract through the 2027 season after his original deal, which included a 2023 team option, was extended in March 2022. Keim’s contract was jointly extended that length as well.
Arizona hired Kingsbury in January 2019 after a one-year tenure of Steve Wilks (2018) followed a relatively successful run by Bruce Arians (2013-17).

According to Bruce Feldman of The Athletic, if Sean McVay decides to stay with the Los Angeles Rams, he could look to hire Kingsbury as an assistant.
Seeing McVay and Kingsbury together would be fascinating, especially since they just coached against each other for the last four seasons.
There’s also a chance that Kingsbury could go back to coaching in college since he was the head coach at Texas Tech before taking the same job with the Cardinals.
