For his TV work, Herbstreit has won five Sports Emmy Awards in various categories. He also appeared annually as a commentator in EA Sports’ NCAA Football until the series was put on hiatus following NCAA Football 14.

From 1989 to 1993, Herbstreit was a quarterback for the Ohio State football team. He played in several games his junior season and was the starting quarterback throughout his senior season.

Herbstreit graduated from Centerville High School in Centerville, Ohio, a suburb of Dayton. As a quarterback for the Elks, he was the Ohio Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior. He also was a standout basketball and baseball player.

Herbstreit was the first player to commit to the Ohio State Buckeyes after the hiring of John Cooper as head coach in 1988.

Herbstreit was a four-year letter winner as a quarterback at Ohio State University from 1989 to 1993.

After waiting his turn as a Buckeye starter behind Greg Frey and Kent Graham, Herbstreit finally led the team as a senior in 1992.

That year, he was a co-captain (along with linebacker Steve Tovar) and was voted team MVP.

Herbstreit passed for 1,904 yards that season, including four 200-plus yard games, before losing to the Georgia Bulldogs in the Florida Citrus Bowl.

Herbstreit set the Ohio State record for pass completions (28) in the rivalry game against Michigan, throwing for 271 yards in a 13–13 tie in 1992.

The record stood until 2006, when it was broken by Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith.


Longtime college football broadcaster Kirk Herbstreit will certainly have his hands full this football season as he begins his first season of full-time NFL coverage for Thursday Night Football with Amazon along with maintaining his role at ESPN on College Gameday.

Many are excited to see a ton of Herbstreit this football season, but he revealed some concerning health issues that he has gone through this offseason that have many worried about his heavy workload this fall.

He revealed in an interview with the Los Angeles Times on Monday that he dealt with blood clots in his lung this offseason after going to the doctor for some breathing problems.

“Your heart arteries are crystal clear, look great,” Herbstreit detailed of the doctor’s diagnosis. “But, you’re not going to believe this: You have clots in your lungs.”

“Somehow they got into my bloodstream, went through my heart and into my lungs,” Herbstreit added. “Once it got into the lungs, it’s like a dead end. They’re in your lungs, but they go through your heart. That’s where people die. … And so I was just like, ‘Damn.’ ”

Many were surprised at the time when he missed ESPN’s coverage of the 2022 NFL Draft, but Herbstreit detailed that these scary health concerns happened around that timeframe in late April.

ESPN College GameDay Analyst and former Ohio State quarterback Kirk Herbstreit will not be taking part in this year’s NFL draft coverage due to a health issue.

Herbstreit said in a Twitter video on Monday that doctors recently found a blood clot in his system. 

He added he feels “good,” but has decided to take a step back from this year’s draft coverage out of an “abundance of caution.”

Herbstreit said in part, “Our team in Vegas will have it covered, and I will be watching. Congrats to all the players! I love this event and look forward to returning next year.”

Originally from Centerville, Herbstreit served as quarterback for the Ohio State Buckeyes from 1989-92.

He graduated from The Ohio State University in 1993 with a degree in business administration and went on to be hailed as one of the “Most Powerful Media Personalities in Sports” by Sporting News magazine, among other accomplishments. 


During his time at ESPN, Kirk Herbstreit’s peak salary was $2 million. His salary was doubled to $4 million when he joined Amazon.
